Voiced by Hilda Toubatla of the Mahotella Queens, ‘Hleziphi’ was one of Malombos’ most well-loved tunes in South Africa, where it gained the title of ‘the magical Hleziphi’ after appearing on the 1967 Malombo Jazz Makers Vol. 2 LP. The lyrics call to a girl, Hleziphi, to come home - ‘Come Hleziphi, bring the cows home to the kraal, it will rain soon’ and the song featured on the programme of the Into the Heart of Negritude show.

Melting Records is pleased to snag and reissue the rare album Five Finger Discount from Budapest-based producer Nándor Kürtössy, known here as Savages. Originally released in 2008 in a limited fashion and only on compact disc, the album has been sought after by hip hop and trip hop heads alike. Melting Records has now issued this classic album for the first time on vinyl and is ready to give these tracks the wide audience they deserve.

Nándor Kürtössy is a prolific producer, behind many projects like Kovacs, Savages y Suefo, and Vega Ass, and is also the founder of his own Hungarian electronic music label, Mana Mana Records. Five Finger Discount was Nándor’s first release, born from the previous few years of sessions creating tracks for himself and his friends. Encouraged to collect these cuts onto an album, Savages was created and this remarkable album revealed. Its legend has grown since the initial release with some considering Five Finger Discount a classic of eastern European hip hop culture. The album track “You’re My Chocolate” has since become quite popular among the Greek downtempo DJ scene.

The melancholic guitars and tranquil atmosphere of “You’re My Chocolate” are indeed special, and its languid beats lead the listener through an evocative journey told through sound. This cut is indicative of Savages’ vibe and is only one of the highlights on this jam-packed album. Cuts like “Lookin’ For You”, “Long Distances”, and “The Blow” also captivate by combining hip hop, vintage lounge, and dance floor appeal into a heady, sample-rich stew. Nándor’s sense of humor is also evident throughout as spoken snippets and spy-crafted rhythms intermingle within the playful arrangements. Savages is on point … and this Five Finger Discount is a hefty bargain.

Sammy Ayala has been a complete pleasure to collaborate with the past years! He's not only been in the most legendary salsa bands (Cortijo), but he wrote music with that huge smile until the day he recently passed away.  For his 74th? or 75th? Birthday, Sammy came down to one of our Turntables on the Hudson parties & rocked the mic & some percussion with us until 4AM... I can only wish to be as talented, animated & positive as Mr Ayala when I'm over 70! Unfortunately we lost Sammy in the physical last year (2012) but we hope you explore all his beautiful music over the years!

To celebrate the forthcoming release of their new album, Excursions in Soul, Reggae, Funk & Dub, Guillaume Metenier’s Soul Sugar collective has offered up a brand-new, digital-only single, ‘Cool Down’.

Co-produced by Metenier with fellow French artists Blundetto and Blackjoy, the track is a sun-kissed slab of 21st century dub built around a typically weighty rhythm and joyous, afternoon-bright instrumentation. Underpinned by hazy bass, authentically shuffling reggae-style drums and echoing effects, ‘Cool Down’ boasts some superb guitar licks courtesy of Blundetto, as well as inspired synthesizer and organ motifs provided by Metenier under his now familiar Booker Gee alias.

‘Cool Down’ is one of a handful of previously unheard tracks on Excursions in Soul, Reggae, Funk & Dub, Soul Sugar’s fourth album. The set gathers together previously released but now hard-to-find tracks that the collective has released on different formats over the last few years, including inspired reggae cover versions of Luther Vandross favourite ‘Never Too Much’ and Marvin Gaye classic ‘I Want You’. It will be released by Gee Recordings later this Spring.
