Message from Toy Box:
"It’s been almost a year since my last multiple track release. I think my music has changed exponentially for the better in that time, and I’m proud of these tracks as I think they display a new vision for what Toy Box music will be in the future. Once you listen I’m sure you will notice that the tracks are considerably different from each other, however I hope you enjoy the certain signature sound that I believe I have been developing.  I initially wrote all the music on the mandolin and then transcribed it to all the different instruments.  The vocals are recordings of myself or others and I hope the melodies get stuck in your head. I tried to lean more towards the acoustic/real-life aspects of sounds, but obviously there is a significant amount of electronic elements involved. I mastered them all myself, but got some feedback from some producer friends.  These tracks were made on airplanes, bus rides, in my living room, the library, etc. I’ve been taking a lot of influence from Odesza, Bonobo, Emancipator, and Flume, but obviously wanting to make the EP as different and my own as possible. All in all, I just hope you really enjoy these sounds and share them with your friends!"

Toy Box releases “Short Stories” EP on Street Ritual! Experience a futuristic chillout vibe fused in with acoustics and organic flavors filled with depth, quality, and balance. Four tracks display melodic captures as vocals and instrumentation create clarity hailing from Denver, CO. These soundscapes create ambient atmospheres of elegant composition and trigger a calming effect that leads through melodic measures. Carter fuses in his mandolin, making for an overall progression of authentic creativity and aesthetic presentation.

Toy Box is the alias of Carter Matthews, an up and coming musician and producer currently modulating in Denver, Colorado. Matthews has managed to stand out in a highly competitive music scene by blending soundscapes , pushing the boundaries of everyday genres, and meticulously blending the instrumental and digital. With his range of production abilities and the unique infusion of his mandolin, Toy Box gives himself a creative advantage over every other player in the game. With his following and inspiration growing stronger each day, the future is looking quite exciting for this young audial wizard.

What more needs to be said about October Child? Producing quality in quantity, he is always on the ball with music to ease the nights as they become longer and colder. The fill of the synthetic strings, ghostly vocals, piano and then a luscious treat of guitar is testament to his versatility as an artist working with many instruments and design ideas. We're always glad to have October Child back on JCO, and what a better way to finish off this gorgeous compilation.

20 years before the emergence of STS9, NASA sent Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 on a mission to the farthest reaches of the solar system and beyond. Each of these probes was equipped with identical Golden Records, special messages attached to what Carl Sagan called “a bottle launched into the cosmic ocean.” They contained numerous images and sounds from throughout the world, pieces of music from various cultures, a map identifying the location of our planet, and other information for whomever, or whatever, might find them.

While the Golden Records included greetings in 59 languages, they made no mention of nations and borders, wars and rivalries, or anything else that divides us. What they did mention was life, love, peace, birth--the things that bind us to one another and to the planet we call home. 

The Universe Inside is a reflection of this message. It is a story about human identity and the magical truth of who we are, where we’re going, and our place in the Universe. It says we are one, made of stardust and the forces of nature that evolved over billions of years. Connected by the sun, moon and stars, we are the living, breathing conscience of the Universe. 

"We are one, made from dust of the stars / down here we bear the weight of the pain and the scars / just want to live with nothing to hide / every one of us a universe inside."
