Asymmetric head Inigo Kennedy returns to his label with a supreme five track EP 'Broken Signals'.

'Battle Scars' opens the EP in dramatic style and acts as a fittingly cinematic introduction before 'Control Phase' hits hard and direct; a slice of sweeping, grinding techno in its purest form. Title track 'Broken Signals' is an absolute beauty, aching pads, full of hope, cemented by an almost electro-tinged beat and set against a distant static noise. 'Contortion' follows with nothing short of relentless, bubbling malevolence. Bringing the EP to a close, is 'Wild Horses' with its layers of unmistakable Kennedy melody set against a solid 909 backdrop.

Linn Elisabet is a Berlin-based producer, DJ, and singer. Led by their own ethereal vocals, raw broken beats, and immersive sound design, their contemporary and transgressive interpretation of techno strives to reimagine possibility and desire. With a classically trained past in cello and church choirs, it is a given where their reverberant soundscapes and symphonic narratives have their roots. Linn Elisabet has released acclaimed works on labels such as 47 and Noise Manifesto, as well as their own imprint Acts of Rebellion. The label expands on Elisabet’s mission: making conventional functionality and restraining policies bow for non-compliance.

For our 19th Deepcast we introduce Kindimmer. After meeting him at one of our summer events in a little cafe, we spoke all things music and clicked. Serious button twister and collector. We had to get him to do a mix for us. So here it is. What a mix.

DEEPCAST - Kindimmer

In early May 2024 I went on a public walk around Middlewick Ranges as part of Jane's Walk Colchester 2024. The overriding theme of the walk was to raise awareness of the flora, fauna and diversity of habitats in this area, which is currently under threat of sale by the MoD and subsequent development of housing. So to aid the campaign of the good folk at Save The Middlewick Ranges, I got up early to get a pre-dawn recording of the nightingales, of which there is a significant national population, and other birds in the area. I located myself in a spot well know by the group to be amongst nightingale territories and captured 20 minutes (10 minutes here) of the glorious dawn chorus. Enjoy X

It's impossible to talk about the sound of DjRUM without using the word cinematic. Whatever he does, it has a feeling of grand importance, widescreen elegance and moving emotion that elevates it way above a dance floor soundtrack. Throughout the course of his career, the UK artist has drawn on downtempo, blurred the lines between drum & bass and dubstep and always imbued his music with spoken words snippets, piano and chamber instruments. His Portrait With Firewood album was a real high-water mark in 2018, and last year his latest outing on R&S once again managed to draw on every aspect of electronic music and come up with something all his own. 

His mix for us this week is a perfect ethereal rave that finds plenty of beauty in the sparse rhythms he draws on from the worlds of garage, techno and drum & bass. There is a delicacy and elegance throughout, even when the beats hit hard and fast as they do at the overdriven and manic mid point. The amen breaks come thick and fast after that, but eventually melt away to propulsive ambient soundscapes that suspend you in time and space. Blissful.
