Winner of the Debussy Piano Competition at Morley College in 2018, this piece was inspired by a visit to Peak Cavern, Castleton in the Derbyshire Peak District, which boasts the largest naturally-formed entranceway in Britain. Years ago, rope makers used to live and work in the cavern as it was the only covered place in the locality with enough space for weaving the long ropes needed for sailing ships, mining and bell ringing, among other things. There were also stories of gypsies and travellers using the caves for shelter and for gatherings. The piece is in episodic form, taking us step by step into the depths of the cave system where the imagination may perceive some of these impressions from the past.
