Laragh and Common Ground invited Brian Crowley, Tian Yu Lloyd, Dr Nita Mishra, Niera Nasr, Joe Odiboh and Aislinn O’Donnell to reflect and explore on issues pertinent to being a citizen of and in Ireland at this moment in time.  This includes how we can collectively recognise and embrace the complexity and diversity of people who migrate to and live in Ireland and their Irishness as an equal and rich contribution to the State.  This discussion emerged during Laragh Pittman’s research into her project The Invisible Museum and through participants who held conversations with Laragh during her Culture Clinic sessions in studio 468.  

Similarly The Visiting Project was organised by Aislinn O’Donnell and Glenn Loughran in studio 468 during 2017.  What is at stake in the concept of ‘visiting’ is the creation of an open process of dialogue that involves disorientation. This is a critical process whereby we ‘visit’ the world imagining it from the standpoints of others that differ from our own, without trying to feel exactly what others feel. This involved thinking about a series of concepts relating loosely to Kant’s Perpetual Peace through example, story, and experience, drawing at times on artefacts and objects. The concepts were peace, war, hospitality, contract, citizen, love of the world. The principle underlying the project was one of non-identification – not labelling and identifying ourselves in advance other than by first name but rather getting to know one another through our stories and ways of seeing the world. It was a space for thinking-together, temporarily suspended from the imperative to make and to act.

THE INVISIBLE MUSEUM
Laragh Pittman’s The Invisible Museum archive in Kilmainham Courthouse wss an assembly and catalogue of material items that speak to people’s experience. A number of donors were invited to lend temporarily a small object whether memento, textile, utensil or article.  The collection aimed to capture something of the complexity and layering of identity and place and the diversity within culture as well as between cultures in Ireland.  The repository glimpses fragments of the stories of migration of people settling in Dublin city; and visualises the often transient and unacknowledged contribution they make to the fabric of Irish life. The opportunity to stage this exhibit within the heritage site of Kilmainham Courthouse lent the installation a powerful dynamic. The artefacts were placed in the mahogany Victorian cabinet manufactured in Dublin from designs sent over from South Kensington Museum (now the V&A) in the 19th century for use in what is now the National Museum of Ireland. Now owned by the OPW and commissioned when under British rule; the cabinet gives the artefacts an added clarity of purpose in questioning the nature of borrowed, stolen and misunderstood cultures and the legacy of colonisation. CITIZEN ARTIST 2016 -2018 was a series of socially engaged artists’ awards and residencies located in studio 468 that explored the many complex aspects of what it is to be a citizen and to live in Ireland today.
