French vocalist, beatboxer, songwriter and producer Sly Johnson unveils 55.4, his much-anticipated fourth studio album, released on BBE Music.

Hailing from Paris, Sylvère Johnson (Sly Johnson) is a major force on the French Hip-Hop, Soul and Jazz scenes, both as a solo artist and as a member of super-group SAIAN SUPA CREW for over a decade, where he was known by the moniker Sly The Mic Buddah.

When the crew broke up in 2007, Johnson began to carve out an impressive career, releasing on Blue Note and Universal Jazz, as well as collaborating with Larry Gold, Roddy Rod, T3 & Elzhi from Slum Village, Georgia Ann Muldrow, Dudley Perkins, FINALE, Erik Truffaz, and legendary French rapper Oxmo Puccino to IAM among many others.

Written and recorded during the first COVID lockdowns between March and May 2020, Sly Johnson’s fourth album blends Soul and Hip Hop, twinning vocal arrangements reminiscent of Prince and D’Angelo with loose, supple, beats and jazzy chords. Most of the musical heavy lifting is done by Johnson himself, but the album features bass by Laurent Salzard, guitar by Ralph Lavital and Anthony Jambon, keys by Nicholas Vella & Laurent Coulondre and a spellbinding guest vocal by Jona Oak.

Why 55.4? “It took 55 days of creation to make the songs of this 4th solo album” says Sly.

Today's atmpospheric exclusive comes from a MIMS favourite of late, Robohands, as we share "Claws", forthcoming on Bastard Jazz.

Robohands, aka Andy Baxter, joins the Bastard Jazz family with a new EP titled “Giallo.” Partly inspired by Italian Giallo (meaning “yellow”) film soundtracks of the late 70s and 80s, as well as the experimental sounds of pioneering krautrock bands like Tangerine Dream and NEU! Armed with an old Juno 60 synthesizer, Andy wrote, recorded, and mixed all the parts himself, including the live drums, adding in multiple layers of effects.

Spread across 8 tracks, “Giallo” spans atmospheric meditations (“Giallo;” “Claws;” “Relax”) to jazzy improvisational explorations (“Fear”), interwoven with brief solo instrumental tapestries (“Horror;” “Float By Like Clouds;” “For the Different”). There is an elegant cinematic quality to the EP, further refined by Robohands’ production prowess and technical chops. “Giallo” builds on the Robohands sound, taking it in an exciting, more experimental direction.

Azar Azar’s latest album, Cosmic Drops, is a vibrant and explosive package of fiery jazz that ties together many of Sérgio Alves’ external inspirations, from afrobeat and funk to house, broken beat, and electronic music. The album showcases a sound for every type of listener, whether they want to chill out or get up and dance. Among the nine tracks on the album, there is one that particularly stands out: “Subway.”

“Subway,” as Azar Azar explains, “intends to emulate a jam session that could spontaneously occur if you met Moodymann in a subway station. But deep down, it's a jam session that I did with myself and Sam (saxophonist) since I played all the instruments with the exception of the sax!” The track is a perfect example of the unique blend of afro-latin-tinged funk and hip hop that Azar Azar has become known for, made using organic and electronic instruments.

The result is a beautiful and mellow groove that is both subtle and unassuming yet stimulating and intense. The track has a certain aura that feels like the perfect soundtrack for a lazy Sunday afternoon, but also has the potential to get you up and dancing.

Azar Azar has a way of seamlessly blending genres and creating something that is uniquely their own, and “Subway” is a perfect example of this. It’s a jam session that Sérgio did with himself and Sam, but it feels like a collaboration with the listener, inviting them to sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride.

Overall, Cosmic Drops is a snapshot of Azar Azar at the top of their game, and “Subway” is just one of the many gems on this incredible album.

On the 3rd anniversary of the mid-pandemic release of Resilience, producer & pianist Jesse Fischer is introducing a remix EP entitled - The Resilience (Recharged). 

MIMS has the pleasure to premiere the first cut on the EP, a remix by Tomoki Sanders of Jesse Fischer's Afrobeat-inspired original jazz composition "Play Date".

The EP is out on August 18th.
