Radio Danziger Vol. 17 by Morris The Player

As winter has come to an end, this set is my way of wrapping up a season of introspection. It was a time of turning inward—getting closer to myself, my sound, and the direction I truly want to take. I’m working on letting go of expectations and focusing on what really moves me, both personally and musically. That search has helped me shape my sound, and this mix reflects that evolution.

It’s still rooted in melodic techno, but it’s darker, more powerful—what I call “dark and dancy.” A big inspiration for this shift was a set by Yard Woman at the end of last year. It embodied everything I love—dark, cool, but also effortlessly feminine. Seeing women absolutely owning it in electronic music makes me so proud, and I hope to see even more of it.

The songs in this set were chosen to take you on a deep journey into your own consciousness. We reached now 20 mixes! What a journey! More than a year after my first, for this edition I wanted to explore more ethereal, progressive sounds and atmospheres. 

I tried to focus on melodic, calming beats — a contrast to the madness of the times we're living in, and a chance to catch our breath after Easter. It is time to introduce the DJs that you'll find behind Toekomstmuziek's decks every two months.
Next on the rotation for is Mauzk. He was born in Buenos Aires and has been based in Amsterdam since 2018. 
For him music has always been around: drumming in bands since he was 15, writing songs in different styles, alternating between the raw energy of punk and the subtleness of progressive rock.
Since living in Amsterdam he's been also diving into the world of electronic music and slowly becoming more and more involved in the local scene. In his own words: "As a newcomer I felt the pressure to try to find my own sound, but now I realized that perhaps such a thing doesn't really exist. So now I'm comfortable experimenting and pushing the boundaries of whatever I do. For this mix I just wanted to share a selection of warm synth-heavy melodies for the colder weather, that might reveal some hidden complexity after a few listens."

It is time to introduce the DJs that you'll find behind Toekomstmuziek's decks every two months.
Next on the rotation is Heij-Ru. He was born in Johannesburg, South Africa and has been based in Amsterdam since 2019.

For him, his love for music started with his love for the Spice Girls. No joke... He couldn't tell you why, buy he knew that he wanted music to be a big part of his life. From Spice Girls and The Backstreet Boys, and The Prodigy's Breathe blowing his tiny mind on some "Now Thats what I Call Music" CD mix, his life changed with his move to San Diego, USA at the age of 10. Being very much the outsider, struggling to fit in, he found himself immersed in the underground punk scene, crowd surfing and skanking his way through his early teen years. During this time, largely influenced by Tool and The Smashing Pumpkins, he picked up the drums as his primary instrument. Since then, its been wave after wave of progressive and alternative rock, to metalcore, emo/screamo, etc.

His first introduction to Electronic music was in Johannesburg - where the Drum n Bass scene was alive and well. Only after moving to Amsterdam in 2019 did he begin to discover Deep House and the various sub-genres of Techno.

"I wanted to put out a set that I would want to experience out at a club. Something with pulsating rhythm that carries you through movements and encourages you to lose yourself, while still keeping you centred. Rhythmic, hypnotic, and the right amount of hard to take you on a trip while you stomp your way to a higher consciousness.."

As soon as I started thinking about it, I thought about all the noise around the world at the moment and the overwhelming amount of feelings.
The head spins around and I have tried to find an answer in a fast, percussive, deep and somewhat peaceful mix.

Can't Remember, also known as August, once a kid who peaked early by monopolizing the local CD burner. His DJ career technically started around age 10, when he was the de facto music director for the kids' disco, carefully curating playlists that were probably 50% non-sense and 50% parental-approved pop. He's been curating playlists ever since, mostly because he’s convinced everyone else has terrible taste.

His true electronic awakening happened circa 2009/2010, thanks to a mind-expanding trip to Barcelona and the glorious chaos of Fusion Festival. It was there he realized he could be doing what he was already doing, only with better bass.

After an inspiring visit to ADE in 2012, August did what any sensible electronic music devotee does: he moved to Amsterdam. He figured if he was going to forget what day it was and why his ears were ringing, it might as well be in the global capital of good techno and house. 

Currently based in Thailand and spending most of his time scuba diving, he occasionally finds an open slot to play some tunes at local bars and the occasional free day to record a mix. This specific mix blends a lot of the sounds and styles that he misses from the many years in Europe.

Lee Ambo's relationship with dance music started out by listening to albums like The Prodigy Experience. Growing up in Australia, his influences shifted from grunge to hip hop and beyond. It was a move to Amsterdam on a whim in 2011 that reignited his love of electronic music. Finding himself in the epicentre of festival culture, Lee Ambo was quickly drawn to the deep house sounds that surrounded him. It was a golden era for electronic music and influences from his peers soon introduced him to a lot of exciting new music.

Inevitably, as is the evolution for most Amsterdammers, this turned into a love of DJing as well. Shaped by his countless hours spent on the dance floor and wide musical taste, Lee Ambo's sets can range from funky and groovy basslines to deep heavy bangers. Outside of music, Lee Ambo also dabbles in graphic arts and has been responsible for all the aesthetic elements of Studio Danziger thus far.

Kamara is a Mediterranean DJ based in Amsterdam, whose musical journey has taken him across Europe in search of creative identity and inspiration. Holland pulled him deep into the electronic music scene, where he found his groove behind the decks.

Known for his wide spectrum of musical influences, he is a versatile performer who delivers cool, driving beats with passion. He often plays indie dance records to ignite momentum on stage, yet he never hesitates to shift into more exotic, tribal rhythms when the energy of the crowd calls for it. His sets flow with intuition, movement, and a sense of harmony.

The set takes you on a psychedelic safari of beats, with smooth transitions and powerful energy peaks. The perfect way to start the year.

Studio Danziger is a collective of 7 friends with a shared love of good beats and good times. Hailing from 4 continents, their sound and influences are as diverse as their backgrounds. These guys have played back-to-back New Year’s parties, and a few in between, at resident club Toekomstmuziek on Danzigerbocht where they also have their music studio. Keep your ears open for new mixes, records, and parties all on the horizon.
