« Hôtel Costes presents... » is a collection of exclusive music recorded at STUDIO HC, the hotel studio.

J.A.C stands as an offshoot of the Midminuit project which was released earlier in the Studio HC series. The story goes that Midiminuit member Jonatan Levi had to leave the recording process for a day, leaving the others - Julien, Adrien and Ceasar with a whole day in the studio which naturally led to experimentation and later the formation of J.A.C, an acronym for the trio involved. 

‘Take Off’ leads the project, a cinematic twelve and a half minutes of ethereal synth textures, swirling dubby echoes, bright emotive piano chords and vacillating bass tones. Up next is ‘In’, this time round embracing a tension building sub swell and crunchy, modulating drums at its core whilst heavily reverberated jazz piano licks and hazy effects flow throughout the composition. 

Opening the B-side is ‘Out’, laid out over five minutes with a snaking resonant synth lead and mind-bending drum and synth oscillations before ‘Landing’ concludes the release with a heady, pulsating sub bass line, resonant flutters and expansive pad swells.

‘Balade-Toi’ LP is a selection of recordings composed by Ecriture Automatique aka Adrien De Maublanc, Adrien Boisseau and featured artist Latica Anić. Adrien Boisseau is a friend of Julien Quentin whom Adrien De Maublanc had worked with on the Midiminuit project. Soon after the pair met De Maublanc invited Boisseau and his viola to the studio for an early morning session and proposed an approach consisting of layering several stems of him playing the instrument. Cloning him over and over allowed them to create a polyphonic atmosphere that melted into a giant meditation like theme mixed with pizzicato ballads. Boisseau then ended up inviting his friend Latica, a cello player who had witnessed the creative process and got enthusiastic to participate.

The result can be heard here across eight tracks all of which feature solely acoustic instruments, the first of its kind in the Studio HC series. Across the package you can hear haunting, subtly unfurling tracks like opener ‘Reveur’, ‘Double A’, ‘Passage-2’, ‘Faire De Son Mieux’ and closing track ‘Pas De Supposition’ encompassing drawn out viola textures, mesmeric slowly bowed strings from the Cello and a blooming dynamism throughout.

Further contributions come in the shape of title-track ‘Balade Toi’ with its plucked strings, psychedelic resonance from a Sansula Kalimba and metallic percussive chimes. ‘Le Bien Veilant’ and its otherworldly voice like chants, vibrato textures and looping plucks and finally ‘La Parole Impeccable’ with its cinematic, classical feel dynamically evolving and retracting through swirling strings, vacillating viola tones and airy wind pulsations across five and half minutes.

Masomenos join forces with ambient artist E/Tape this April for the fifth EP in the Hôtel Costes Presents...Studio HC series.

Parisian duo Masomenos are the minds behind the fledgling Studio HC project, which has already gained widespread recognition for its contemporary electronic twist on a classical and jazz leaning aesthetic. Here we see the pair deliver a project alongside E/Tape, a Slovenian producer and DJ operating in the ambient and experimental scene and highly praised for his emotive, atmospheric style, which has seen him, play alongside the likes of Jan Jelinek, Midori Takada, Mark Ernestus and Jeff Mills.

‘The Sound Of The Earth’ is made up of two parts, both fourteen-minutes long and split across the two sides of the record. ‘Part 1’ on the A-Side sees the duo fusing murky pad swells and modulating synths alongside vacillating percussion and thunderous low end pulses.

‘Part 2’ then continues the composition with the introduction of mediative voices, more percussive nuances, tripped-out resonant synth licks and gritty bass leads ebbing and flowing throughout the track sporadically.

« Hôtel Costes presents... » is a collection of exclusive music recorded at STUDIO HC, the hotel’s studio, and here we see the series deliver its second album from Midiminuit, the outfit made up of pianist Julien Quentin, bass player Yonatan Levi and electronic musicians Cesar Merveille & Adrien de Maublanc (Masomenos).

Following on from the ‘Round The Clock’ LP back in September 2019, Midiminuit return with more of their atmospheric electronic twist on modern classical and contemporary jazz. Across the project they deliver hazy jazz jams like the bass noodle, wandering keys and metallic percussion fuelled ‘Kitchen Table’, the baroquely unfolding improvised feel of ‘Loop’ and the snaking dynamic groove of ‘Why Is The Bass So Low’.

The collective also veers into more abstract realms with contributions like ‘Welcome’, which features the ethereal stylings of vocalist Hani, the psychedelic opening piece ‘Do This Thing’ and the minimal modulating feel of ‘Barrio Acido’.

The album also presents some more new age aesthetics via the slowly blooming synthesis of ‘Deep In’ and the cinematic soundscapes of ‘Kindness’ which flutter amidst an intricately crafted rhythmic pulse.
