STUDNITZKY is widely known for transporting real emotions without sob stuff with his songs and trumpet playing. He masters this tightrope walk like no other with an unagitated finesse. His astonishing way of trumpet playing made him one of the most sought-after session players in Germany nowadays. That’s why he’s on the road now for years with Jazzanova, Nils Landgrens Funk Unit, Mezzoforte and Wolfgang Haffner and is playing at the biggest festivals worldwide. Probably it’s Studnitzky’s hectic cosmopolitan lifestyle between airports, hotels and stages that makes the grace of nature his biggest source of inspiration. It’s here where the full blood musician is grounded and is able to keep himself confident and concentrated about his very own cosmos of sounds.

The current album "Ky Do Mar" came together in Portugal and Iceland. You can pin down this road movie like soundtrack somewhere between Miles Davis and Neil Young.

"Ky Do Mar" is a merciless tribute to the sea. Studnitzky recorded it in a house on a cliff overseeing the Atlantic ocean in a little village in Portugal, where the elders sit on a bench infront of the church and stare at the distant sea. There’s no obvious masterplan for this fascinating, soft, sparse and peaceful music which is, at the same time, full of imaginary magic. It’s all about this special moment which Studnitzky captured musically.

Ky - Do Mar

Single ‘Lucide’ captures just how comfortable Sebastian Studnitzky has become with the grey area in between genres, making music that cycles through different styles and moods in ease. Starting off with familiar classical piano chords that almost feel commonplace, the track opens up to Studnitzky’s nonsensical singing, and later signature trumpet playing – so soft the tone threatens to break. On the piece, voice and trumpet appear to reverse their roles; while the trumpet feels like a fragile human voice, the vocals are used as an instrument delivering sounds rather than words. Both instruments plus the piano intermingle freely on ‘Lucide’, sometimes walking in pairs, at other times solo, one instrument picking up where the other left off playfully. It’s truly experimental but carries none of the pretense of the word.

But more so, it's about locating conversations I wanted to have with myself and other people of African descent who may have similar questions and needs to validate the complexities of the realities we live in as intertwined and intricate as they may be. STUDNITZKY has always been a traveller between the realms of jazz, classical and electronic music. 
In his inimitable music not a single note is superfluous. It is detailed, minimalistic and transparent, yet it displays an emotional depth which is uniquely personal.
Too edgy for pop, too emotional for jazz, too opulent for electronic music, and with a rhythmic groove far removed from avant-garde, he has created something that is refreshingly new.

STUDNITZKY is already an internationally acclaimed performer of the highest level on both trumpet and piano. Few instrumentalists of his generation have appeared on the stages of so many clubs and festivals all over the world. He has performed with names such as Nils Landgren’s Funk Unit, Jazzanova, Mezzoforte and Wolfgang Haffner. Most recently, he can be heard on recordings by Nils Landgren’s Funk Unit, Jazzanova, Wolfgang Haffner, Nightmares On Wax, Moritz von Oswald, Mezzoforte and Dominic Miller. In 2012 he founded Contemplate, his own record label and network. In 2014 he initiated the XJAZZ Festival Berlin and took charge as its musical director. It immediately became Berlin’s largest jazz festival and turned the German jazz scene on its head. Since September 2014 Sebastian Studnitzky has been a professor at the Dresden University of Music.
