Chapter Six

The drums faded into distance. The golden army vanished into mist. And in their place came a wind—warm, gentle, and full of memory. It swept through the valley like breath from the earth itself, curling around the father and daughter.

They didn’t speak. There was no need. The wind carried them forward, though their steps were light and unforced. A melody rose in the air—soft, distant, a heavenly piano that shimmered like sunlight through water, each note lifting the heart as if touched by light itself.

The daughter walked slightly ahead now, no longer clutching her father’s hand. Her stride had changed—longer, more sure. She glanced back once, offering a quiet smile, then faced forward again. The path was dissolving into golden haze, the landscape softening like the final moments of a dream.

As the melody grew bigger, the wind swirled upward, lifting her feet from the earth. Her eyes closed, arms outstretched, as the warm air carried her higher, the notes cradling her like wings. She felt something stir inside her—not fear, not even excitement, but knowing. A calm truth. The journey had shaped her. She had seen mystery, wonder, danger, awe. And through it all, she had learned to trust her feet, her breath, her heart.

The wind grew brighter, lighter. The air itself seemed to dissolve, and her eyelids grew heavy.

When she opened them, she was home.

Her room was quiet, the morning light soft on the windowsill. Outside, birds called gently. The journey was gone—but not lost. It lived within her now: in the dust on her satchel, the curve of her spine, the rhythm in her breath.

She turned her face to the window, eyes filled with the kind of wonder that only comes after seeing what most never do. And in the quiet of her heart, a voice spoke—not in words, but in certainty:

You will go again.

And she smiled.peaceful

At 55 years old, I am a grandfather and am rediscovering the magic of a newborn baby. When we see this innocence and fragility, we retrieve in each of us that simple but wonderful thing that is humanity.

This album was originally released for streaming in 2020 and is appearing on SoundCloud for the first time now.  It was my first album featuring works for a large ensemble with music performed by Camerata Philadelphia conducted by Dr. Stephen Framil with guest artists Brett Deubner and Peggy Pei-Ju Yu. Tracks include THE FOUR ELEMENTS for viola and string orchestra, PAVANNE FOR A WORLD WITHOUT WAR for string orchestra, IN PRAISE OF REASON for cello, 2 horns and string orchestra and MYSTICAL SONGS for soprano, viola and string orchestra setting poems by the Spanish mystic Fernando Rielo.  The album's title comes from one of his poems.

Pavanne To A World Without War

Our little band has been busy over the summer months working on songs for a fall release.  This is perhaps one of the more spiritually-centered songs we have written and published.  How responsible are we for the evil that has come upon the world, for the resultant suffering it has brought. Peter's beautiful words begin with an act of redemption for mankind, but end with judgement not by God's choice, but man's will. 
The words did not come easily as Peter confesses that his pen "hovered above the last line for several minutes" not wanting to write it, but with a prophet's conviction, knew it must be written. The question is begged by those who will to believe, does the beauty of God's creation also involve justice and judgement, what Luther called "God's alien work"?  
Peter's verse has never been more poignant or Seagull's production more finely crafted. His track note also offers further insight into our thinking on the song and is well worth reading.
