Almost one year ago to date, Joshua and I were running around the playa with a recorder capturing soundscapes, bikes, art car tires, wind, art project bass tones, fire, the burn, thoughts, moments, tears, anxieties, and messages of love.  The goal: to create a piece of audio magic that embodied the soundscape - sampling, creating drum kits, crafting music all with nothing but sounds from the playa and using the words of the burners that inhabited the dust as the lyrics.  A job we knew would be full of sweat, time, and technically detailed passion.  A job that would be well worth every moment.  *EVERY SINGLE SOUND ENCAPSULATED IN THIS PIECE IS FROM THE PLAYA, 2013, NOT ONE OUTSIDE PIECE OF AUDIO WAS USED.*  This is a piece of audio magic whose soul intention is to be a gift to you.  To you, our fellow burners, to you the ones who’ve never been, to you the ones who aren’t going this year, to you the ones who are already en route, to you the ones who are just a bit curious of what our magic tastes like.  After almost one year, Volume 1 of what we hope to be a yearly gift for your auditory pleasure is complete. Washington, DC-based multi-instrumentalist, singer, and songwriter Zoë Ravenwood became a being of pure sound after getting bit by a radioactive David Bowie LP in her youth. She spent her early years rubbing books about sound & music, records, tapes, and CDs against the sides of her head in some kind of bizarre process of musical knowledge-osmosis while chewing on ¼-inch instrument cables that were plugged into vintage amplifiers. Today, she is a girl with a guitar and feelings that she wants to put in you via her raw, thoughtful, confessional lyrics, her soulful and emotive vocals, and her fancy guitar playin'. 'The Problem Might Be Me' is Zoë's debut album; a genre-defying blend of old-world influences, folk-rock song structures, and modern instrumentation and sounds, and was created in collaboration with Kanizzle of Subatomica.

Just then, like a prayer answered, a seductive melody triggers a primal part of her instincts' memory. A recollection of cool, crisp air. A breeze.wet against her skin. Twilight. Visions of an alien dream world of lavender oceans and silver sand beaches. Warm and pulsating analog waves crash in front of her, guiding her mind from this Venusian fantasy to an ancient, eerily quiet, and mysterious place. The stone walls covered in moss, and relief carvings of an undecipherable script from a long forgotten time. Ahead, illuminated by a mysterious amber colored glow, is a wooden table. She takes a seat in the antique chair set across from the lizard. On the table, a key. The lizard offers her a bottle that says "drink me". She hesitates - but nonetheless takes a sip. ..darkness.nothing.. A door appears in the shadows ahead. It's locked. The key!

Since 2013, we have been working on a continuous audio project:  we take field recordings of soundscapes, vocals, drips, drabs, clinks, clanks, fire, wind, bikes, dust, all the audible things in Black Rock City.  We then take these sounds, sample them, and create an audible journey of the previous year, releasing it shortly before we venture off to the present year’s burn.  Only sounds from the playa were used in this piece - not one bit of outside recording has been utilized.  No DJ sets, nothing pre-recorded - every instrument and percussive sound you hear is a sample of a dusty sound or recorded live, then looped, mangled, sampled, played, and modified.  We comb through dozens of hours to find the perfect :05 to weave into this tapestry.  

Most importantly - this is our gift to you!  A gift we hold quite true to our hearts.  A free download each year of a journey of light hearted beauty, deep, introspective moments, and pure, unfiltered magic.  

To all who contributed their words when asked to say something random - *thank you*…From the gate to the man to the temple to wherever you dwell- may your journey be all you are searching for and more…with dust filled love + hugs
