Having released our first American-produced EP a few months back with @Bakir’s brilliant FKOFd008, two releases later we’re following up with another American artist. Although @jussb is based in Bali these days, he’s a producer we’ve long been a fan of - so much so we’ve had this EP scheduled since February…

“We first started working with Juss B at the end of 2012, welcoming him to the MakeItGood x FatKidOnFire feature series with an outstanding guest mix and interview. Since then, we’ve gone on to release one of his tunes - Friction - on last year’s FKOFUn/Known01 and hosted a handful of his FKOF Frees (including last year’s Anathema and the more recent Evolve). Whenever we work with the producer, the response is always an overwhelmingly positive one; it seems both we and the FKOF audience can’t get enough of him. 

“Korrupt first suggested signing a Juss B FKOFd EP when he heard The Omen VIP earlier this year. We’ve always been keen on Torrey’s sound but we felt that track best epitomises why; haunting vocals, clattering percussion and a brick wall of sub. Braata is another one of Torrey’s older tunes we’ve been sitting on for a while. It’s a regular on the FKOF Sessions radio show and is always greeted by a roar of approval when it’s dropped on a system. You can hear why when the first drop rolls in, with its tight tribal drum work, spooky samples and a tsunami-like baseline that forces you to take note. Cerberus is a slightly more laid-back affair, one that pulls for the vocals but combines them with rolling synths, reverb’d drums and significant space between the elements. Boatland is the newest tune of the four, one that authoritatively puts the Juss B stamp on the dubby vibe everyone’s producing at the moment. Of the four, Boatland might just be our favourite track on the Juss B EP. It’s sumptuous and sensual; a tune perfectly comfortable at home on the stereo or played out in a set.

“Separately, the four tracks on Torrey’s FKOFd EP invite repeat listens. Together, they represent why we’ve signed him. It’s a brilliantly cohesive release, highlighting what the producer is capable of, and one we’re very proud of.”

Juss B - FKOFd010 [FKOF Promo]

‘Chro’ is a potent broken-beat roller, which welds street ethics and space-conscious sound design into a pumping, futuristic hybrid of jungle and techno. Lightning-fast snare combos snap and hiss, as a heavyweight jungle b-line hoovers its way up and down an earth-shaking rhythmic assault. 

On the flip, ‘Chro’ is given a poisonous treatment by dark beat architect Wen. This DJ tool is a hazy, languid take on the original’s shattered drums, ethereal paranoia and gangster bassweight. Wen’s version exudes a strong technical studio confidence layered with a crafty array of sinister sonic inclinations.

LAB016 is simply dark, forward-leaning club music for the ruff soundsystem set.

When we think of the hybrid sounds of jungle, footwork, drum and bass, and hip-hop, the first place that comes to mind isn't necessarily Ireland. However, some of our favorite recent releases in this realm have come from the Emerald Isle, via one of the most exciting labels in the bass music game; Rua Sound, and we're starting to think maybe we should be paying more attention to the Irish. They simply don't miss, and with a label roster sporting legends like TMSV, Sully, Sam Binga, Lewis James, and more, they have the talent to back it up. 

Today's premiere is from the RUA008 "The General" release from London's Touchy Subject. He's been somewhat quiet over the past year, after a couple big releases including a very well-received EP on Fracture's Astrophonica as well as a freshman release on Rua Sound. We're excited to hear him back with another EP on Rua, and we're proud to present the latest single from the release, "Seek and Find." It's a huge ragga-influenced jungley 170bpm dubwise stomper, so make sure you play this one on a big system. Enjoy, and make sure you follow Touchy Subject and Rua Sound! The Earth Cry EP is a body of work which draws influence from nature bringing the listener into a world of blurred genre lines once again with trademark low frequency pressure.

Cid Poitier coins the term “Sub:Electronica” to define the opening track Arrival; a delicate and progressive harp-lead journey into the exploration of sub bass frequencies resonating as low as 27hz, drawing on the sound palette of electronica, techno and drone based genres.

Title track “Earth Cry” brings an emotive tone to this record built on a foundation of dub, dubstep and orchestral undertones. Experiments into creative uses of distortion provide a juxtaposed edge to the smoother elements of this track.

Amygdala is the deep and haunting cello led symphony of this record, and is influenced by the region of the brain responsible for the formation and storage of emotional events that we experience in our lives.

The EP is concluded by Empathy 101 which brings an electronic, musical post-grime sound - layered with weighty bass to deliver a sense of digital compassion wrapped in analogue love.

The artist's ethos is to create pieces of musical art which carry meaning and can hopefully bring some good to the world and shine a spotlight on issues affecting our collective existence.

Manuka boss man Hypho teams up with Manchesters Dubstep and 130 don Biome on a two track EP, bringing you a style infused between Bass, Techno, Breaks and Dubstep. The first track 'Encoded' is a stripped back chugger built for the heads and the dance floor with mid range reese stabs and outgoing sub bass hits. Track two which is 'Deform' has been around as a dub plate for quite some time and you may have heard it been played out if you have ever caught a Biome or Hypho set. This track entails processed break beats and atmospheric breakdowns, definitely not one for the faint hearted.

DJ'ing since 1997, Cid Poitier was Influenced by 90's Jamaican dancehall, but when Jungle broke onto the scene he found a new outlet for his musical passion. Since then he has taken the progressive journey into Drum and Bass, Early Dubstep and more recently Deep Minimal Experimental sounds which encompass his countless influences from the 90's and beyond. Cid Poitier's music is heavily inspired by these genres and the rich cultural melting pot that is South London.
