10 years ago, Subdrive started as one of the internet’s first underground electronic music podcasts. Really rough around the edges and a complete college production, the show started with a simple concept: delivering the best in underground electronic music. 

Since then, technology has changed music and its discovery. Electronic music has risen to mainstream status. We wanted to return to what started Subdrive, our podcast series, and we’re excited to announce our first new episode in years.

Every few weeks we’ll be presenting a new mix from an artist we respect. The mixes will be presented without track listing, and reflect what is inspiring the artists at the moment.

April’s episode is made by an old friend of ours, NYC-based music tinkerer @arq. His upbringing in gotham helped hone his skill as a master selector blending a spectrum of genres for all types of crowds all over NY from spots like The Panther Room at Output, Bossa Nova Civic Club, to tiny hidden gems in the city. His thoughtful digging and choice deep cuts also extend to his collaborations with the versatile talents of his crew, Suavehaus.

His latest mix for our podcast is exactly what Spring and Summer are about: dancing late to warm, deep soulful house, laced with a little techno and disco that allude to the past.

It’s spring in NYC and that means outdoor dance parties, rooftops, BBQs, and warm vibes. So it’s fitting that our latest mix comes from another New York resident DJ and producer, Luka Tacon. Luka cut his teeth in the NY indie rock and dance scene, while slowly drifting deeper into the underground electronic world. As one of the founding members of NYC collective The Deep, Luka and his crew have been throwing down house cuts until the early morning across the city for some time now, including their own  "Brooklyn summer staple" Might Get Weird parties.

For his Subdrive mix Luka has compiled a selection of fresh tracks that reflect his eclectic taste in deeper house, techno, and disco. The set paints a picture of the vibe you can expect at one of his parties here in New York, whether it’s on a rooftop, a club, or the back of a fried chicken spot in Brooklyn. 

His latest track, "Beyond Your Eyes" is available for free download at @theumbrella, and has a forthcoming release on New York's legendary Nervous Records.

Her passion for genre-bending music can be heard in her podcast for Subdrive, blending and mixing her ever-growing record collection ranging from ambient, fusion & crossover jazz, latin grooves, afrobeat, left-field, house and soulful disco delights.

For the end of September we have our own founder, @Galbis, contributing his first mix for the Subdrive podcast. 

Since starting Subdrive in 2005 as a college radio show in Brooklyn, to launching the label and collective in 2009, (Ricardo) Galbis has tirelessly championed fresh electronic music and artists through our events, releases, and collaborations. The label has served as the home for the early careers of artists such as @mikemago @curlup @figure with support from acts such as Diplo, MSTRKRFT, Horse Meat Disco, among others.

His mix opens with the sounds of the caribbean rainforest, leading into a slowly building arrangement of tracks with a focus on melancholic sounds, beautiful vocals, deep basslines, and sharp synths.

October’s first podcast comes from @killkartel, a tech entrepreneur and former athlete who decided to focus on making music in 2011 after surviving an accident that almost took his life. Fast forward to 2016 and Kill Kartel runs a new label called Electronic Animals and has launched a regular mix series featuring musical works from a variety of artists staying away from the mild mainstream sounds.

Almost reflecting the season’s changes, Kill Kartel’s October podcast blends deeper and techier sides of house that slowly peak, wind, and twist over the course of his one hour mix.

With releases on Guatemalan label Danzon Records, as well as a resume of top-notch venues under their performance belts, these Spaniards are looking to make 2017 the year folks take notice.

This month we’ve got a laidback set from friend and collaborator Vin Damato. A true New Yorker, Vin relocated last year to Los Angeles to focus on music. Since then he’s pulled from his musical roots and created his distinctive sound, a combination of throwback 90s R&B vibes, house music, and sexy soul whose songwriting spotlights experiences of heartbreak and growth.

It’s the middle of December and we’ve now clocked in 16 podcast episodes (including this one) in the past 12 months. To close out 2016, we’ve got a fantastic mix from one of the original Subdrive artists who we’ve known since the blog house/electro days, NYC dance floor veteran Krames. 

Krames’ eclectic production expertise pulls from a variety of bass heavy genres and a solid decade of experience under his belt. Constantly evolving, he’s established himself as a talented force within the underground of NYC with recent releases on Todd Terry’s Terminator records and his own analog techno focused Afterwave Records, which he founded in 2016. 

His skillful precision when producing and performing with hardware, drum machines and modular synths heavily influences this month’s mix. You’ll hear warm, chaotic analog techno stitched deeply throughout his podcast for us, a perfect way to end the year.

This month is a special heartfelt tribute mix to the late DJ and producer @BIGMAKK, whose catalog of releases spanned the gamut of genres from moombahton, bass, and more on some of the industry's biggest labels. His close friend Florida-based artist and member of Moombah Mafia, @ma_less, decided to create this #BigMakkForever tribute mix for her Subdrive podcast.

"I had the honor and the privilege of DJing alongside Big Makk for over 5 years at Shake 'n Bass. I got to watch him grow as an artist, as a person, and as my friend, honestly he was family to me. His music was always amazing to me, I remember the first song to really grasp my attention was his Head's High flip. I knew then this man was destined to be nothing but amazing. 

I watched him evolve and really elevate himself to another level especially after attending F.I.R.S.T. Institute. I was really excited to see where he was going and was always so immensely proud, to say he inspired me would be an understatement, he changed my life not only through his music but with the magnitude of the kindness and love he possessed in his soul. Although he is no longer with us, I feel his presence in all that I do. 

His music is the greatest gift he left behind and it has brought me so much peace and joy. This mix is compiled of some of my favorite songs from when I first met him to songs he left behind. This is by no means his entire catalog, I'd like to say it's the tip of the iceberg, but they are songs that have strong memories, songs that I love, and songs that I will be playing in my sets as long as the Universe has me here circling around the sun. I hope you all enjoy this mix as much as I did making it.

DIRTY DAMAGE is a massive, bass monolith. Tongue in cheek with its vocal samples, this tune will blow away crowds and clubs around the world very soon. Kicking off the new season of podcasts, we're extremely excited to welcome Brazilian duo, @mumbaata, made up of producers/DJs Lennox Hortale and Pedro Poyart. 

With releases on luminary labels such as Get Physical, Dear Deer, D-Edge, Warung, and Re:Sound, they’ve quickly become one of the most respected projects in the electronic music scene in their native Brazil. Mumbaata takes inspiration from various sources including African and Brazilian cultures, electronic music, and Jazz, blending them into dance floor ready tunes and performances that cross cultural boundaries.

The duo was awarded breakthrough producer at the Rio Music Conference Awards 2017 and played at the Electronica Stage in Rock In Rio 2017 Festival.

Subdrive Podcast - Episode 32 - Jordi Iven

Subdrive welcomes its newest signing, Barcelona-based @Rodeman, to the roster. His debut release, "Feel", brings 3 beautiful emotive tracks from the world of melodic house and techno. 

The EP opens with title track "Feel" with its dreamy synth pads, setting the mood for the rest of the EP. It slowly builds energy, eventually cutting out to otherworldly vocals that crescendo and drop the listener back into the record at its peak.

"Midnight Caller" follows that vibe with a more driving, pumping club sound. Where "Feel" is calm and collected, "Midnight Caller" is more epic with its use of dramatic synths.

"Mascara" goes in the opposite direction of the two while keeping the core DNA the same. More melodic house than techno, it's drum programming is rhythmic and wild with synth flares that will create various dance floor moments. 

Though a new comer to the world stage, Rodeman has been producing and DJing for over two decades. His latest EP with us is his strongest work to date, and the world's top DJs agree. "Feel" EP already has support from the likes of Sasha, Township Rebellion, Paco Osuna, and Damian Lazarus.

This month we welcome seasoned New York-native, nightlife hustler, DJ and producer Morsy to the podcast.
