The quality of Stockholm LTD’s 2016 output has been hard to top, with acclaimed full length ‘Isle of Real’ from label boss Pär Grindvik in May, followed by a split EP from Grindvik and SLOBODA label head Nihad Tule in September.

And the Stockholm born, Berlin­based imprint is right back with another lethal VA, ‘A Number of Thoughts’. Their 39th release combines contributions from Dutchmen Doka, Sinfol and Octual plus Belgian newcomer Phara, as well as Grindvik himself.

Doka’s ‘Hidden’ layers staggering, tribal percussion under sinister robotic formants. Label boss Grindvik follows up with The Order, where jagged waves of ice build and swell to a dramatic breakdown, to be broken against warm chords and deep harmonies.

On the flipside, Phara turns out 6 minutes of thundering, stuttering techno, while Sinfol and Octual round off the EP with ‘Signals’, as syncopated toms fire under breathy moans.

Dynamic Ukrainian producer Yan Cook makes his debut on Soma Records with the Wide Angle EP. Active on the scene for some time now and releasing on a number of top flight labels, Yan delivers a devastating 4 track EP, chalked full of his distinctive sound. 

The ominous title Wide Angle kicks things off with thumping and tripped out low end and doesnt hold back, firing straight out of the block with rapid percussion and twisted synth elements. Krater keeps up the pace with a more rolling and hypnotic feel; crushing rhythmic elements has Yan on full attack mode with this track. Blacklisted keeps up the aggressive vibes with sinister tones, growling basslines and yet more jarring and propulsive rhythms. Closing out with Red Stream, Yan continues with the malevolent vibes as dark and forbidding tones permeate throughout this perfectly crafted tool.

Yan Cook is yet another welcome addition to the ever growing roster of high quality talent on Soma.

Berlin's FLASH Recordings is a leading underground imprint of the finest techno, headed up by Florian Meindl, and admired around the world. The latest release contains four original works plus a special bonus track that was previously a vinyl only selection on FLASH, and that was featured on Fiedel's recent Berghain 08 Mix CD for Ostgut Ton. Italian-Berliner known as Avgusto, who is a key artist of FLASH with numerous EP's and remixes for the label. His contributions can also be logged for the likes of Kaputt, Elektrax, !Organism and Amazone also, as he continues to be noted as an exciting producer. The tracks range from raving, high octane club weapons, to more hypnotic, driving sounds that have a powerful and gritty vibe all round.
