Sounds Like Jorge - Segundo
SLJ-2 is a 100 % vinyl mix of amazing Jorge Ben versions by Batukizer created in April 2020 during lockdown while digging deep into our Brazilian music archives.

We continue our work from SLJ-1 presenting a unique selection of world class cover versions of Jorge Ben songs mixed with a couple of super rare non-album Jorge Ben tracks.

Opening the mixtape is a gospel/spiritual inspired Brazilian choir version of the 1963 classic Chove Chuva (raining rain) melting into Bebeto's tribute to Jorge Ben using the same melody as an intro and stealing lines and titles from JBJ epic songs throughout this amazing homage.

The mix centers around the 1970s versions from Myriam Makeba, Wilson Simonal and lesser known cover versions on obscure 7 inches. Finishing off is the Jorge Ben original song about the mythical Saci Perere figure from Brazilian folklore.

Henna Onna is a Yerevan-based artist who has been surrounded by music since childhood. 1) Tell us a bit about yourself and your record collection.

I'm a musician, DJ and researcher of phonographic records. I was born in Belo Horizonte, capital of Minas Gerais, surrounded by mountains, in the heart of Brazil. I've been searching records for over 20 years and I've seen a whole story transforming. My collection is largely Brazilian music, but I'm also interested in jazz, orchestra, grooves, soul, funk, independent music that is outside the big labels.

2) 45/7 is all about celebrating the 7". Can you tell us a bit about what you love about the format.

What to say about the 7''? In Brazil we call it "Compacto". In a large part of my search I began to become more and more interested in 7inch compactos primarily because of their format, being lighter and better to carry. Secondly because they were cheaper at the time and were considered almost trash (nowadays most are even more valued than LPs). Third, because you often find things that were not released on the LP album, artists who released them on the promotional compact that were not for sale, only distributed to radio stations and music journalism.

3) One hour of vinyl goodness... can you talk us through your selection for your 45/7 mix?

The special set that I recorded on 7inch compacts (also called 45s in many countries) I preferred to only separate Brazilian music for this selection. Recorded at home in a spontaneous way, trying to select special things that are not obvious but musical and profound.

4) Where can people catch you / listen to your music?

People can hear my music in person somewhere I'm playing in person, but they can also hear some sets of my recordings. Many things I uploaded on the internet such as sets, podcasts and some live shows
