Strange but true fact: mining is responsible for nearly half of the world’s economy. The history of mining around the world can be read in the open scars that have been left when the sought after resource has been extracted. In these wounds, often larger-than-life pits abandoned by humans, new forms of life have gathered. Inverted Mountains is a documentary record of one of these spaces. 

Portugal’s Borba Region is rich in marble, 400 pit mines dot the landscape, all but 50 are abandoned. In 2018 a wall of one of the biggest quarries collapsed and buried five people in a landslide.

This track offers a detailed examination of sunset at the bottom of the pit, four years after the accident. Pigeons circle in the lower levels, offering a sound of wings, while starlings and swallows gather near the mouth of the pit, 50 meters above. The natural echoing acoustics of the steep walls allow each bird cry to resonate in a living delay, as if there were thousands not hundreds of birds gathering here. At the very end, the lonely bird song is echoed by a human voice, calling out in a plaintive wordless cry, the ghost of all those whose lives were lost in this forsaken place.

Nous sommes le 5 décembre 2023 à Paris, dans la librairie Tschann Montparnasse. Il est 18h passé. Par une soirée ordinaire d'hiver, nous assistons à un échange singulier, saisi à la volée, au milieu des livres en piles. En compagnie de Marie-Madeleine Mervant-Roux (directrice de recherche au CNRS) et de Bastien Gallet son éditeur, Daniel Deshays, praticien multiple du son, chercheur lui-même, explore en 75 minutes quelques-unes des thématiques nombreuses qu'aborde son dernier ouvrage "Libertés d'écoute : le son comme véhicule de la relation" publié aux éditions MF. L'écoute comme paradigme de l'attention, le caractère fragile de celle-ci, ses modalités de production, d'apparition et de disparition dans les contextes de la narration audio, au cinéma, au théâtre et à la radio... l'importance de la coupure et de la discontinuité dans les écritures du sonore... la poésie du monde que captent les micros, etc. La force de l'enregistrement, le partage du sensible, etc. Sans rien discriminer, l'enregistreur capte les glissandi de la porte de la librairie qui signale l'entrée des visiteurs, tandis qu'au loin les véhicules de police déploient leurs sirènes, rue de Rennes. Un paysage sonore urbain et aléatoire tamisé par les livres, se dessine derrière le défilé des mots.
