jhl is the Auckland-based vocalist, producer, and sound designer folding pop’s emotional core into experimental form. Their tracks move like dream logic — crystalline hooks dissolve into distortion, operatic phrasing meets club pressure. With roots in classical composition and an obsession with sonic perfection, they turn fragility into architecture.
Emerging through projects like the Swansong EP (2024) and a run of self-released singles, jhl built a following on SoundCloud for pieces that feel both sacred and corrupted. Reinterpretations of Azealia Banks's "fuck him all night" and Portishead’s “Glory Box” sit alongside self-produced material that blurs the line between cover and reconstruction. Cuts like “Shafts of Flame” and “Tar” glide between baroque melody and post-internet melancholy, while newer work edges toward sharper, dance-oriented structures.
Across releases and mixes for NYMPHO Radio, Resident Advisor, and underground platforms worldwide, jhl have expanded their language through collaboration — working with Blood of Aza, cyntheszr, and others on pieces like “Ritual Death” and “Genesis (Estrogen Mix)”. These projects expose a tension between control and collapse, clarity and noise.
For Beats&Bliss, jhl present a mix composed entirely of their own productions — a body of work spanning solo creations and collaborations where their sonic imprint remains unmistakable.

“Before making music together, they started by injecting each other with hormones. Drawing inspiration from the deconstructed noise transfem scene, Elie and Astra Octarine formed @ultracute a noise and computer music project using their DIY granulators. A duo of disassembled dolls who are followers of the post-(anti-)club for academic bitches, overly manipulated by FLINTA spaces and pronoun circles, whose tracks represent the destruction of their own confidence. Their first album was released in August on the swiss label Herzkern. Bodily autonomy for all and free Palestine.”

Ultra Cute drop tonight a Realist mix which is not deconstructivist as much as an abolition of anything but the refinding, an assertion of solidity in elision of any containment, reappropriation as a singular personhood in reference. The probability where an internet’s wealth of hyperkinetic and emotive music is matched with the virtuosic destruction availed by computational tools. An everyday ultimacy, where pop music, fidelity and becoming are enacted via an annihilatory euphoria at-hand, made by two artists who shy not from euphoria’s detumescence. This is neither an academic music nor a postmodern one. It is a statement that in the extremity of toolkits and interpretation is discovered that which illustrates labile circumstances and bodies that in an explosion of actuality escape their own definition. ~Definitionally new, but a music that negates such words.

Herrensauna announces Vol. 4 compilation
10 years x 10 artists

Berlin-based imprint and queer collective Herrensauna return with the fourth instalment of their compilation series, which laid the foundation for the record label in 2020 as its first release. Herrensauna Vol. 4 – out on January 9, 2026 – ties in with the collective’s 10th anniversary.

To mark the occasion, the compilation features 10 artists to represent 10 years, bringing together residents and aligned artists. Ranging from full-on techno work-outs and club heaters to wonked-out rhythms and experimental textures, Vol. 4 showcases the full breadth of the Herrensauna sound – featuring new tracks from JASSS, Rhyw, Erik Leubs, Yazzus, KAVARI, Measure Divide, SPFDJ, Slim Soledad, Astral Bandit & DJ Hauge, and Peder Mannerfelt.
