Anyasa (aka Anish Sood) releases his debut four-track EP ‘Gaya’, following the first single ‘Rasiya’ released on July 28th. Anyasa marks the beginning of his transition to a new artist name and signature sound.

‘Gaya EP’ sets the tone for Anish’s new style which is a unique blend of electronic production that has become his trademark over the past decade and Indian classical vocals that represent his roots. Gaya, a derivation from ‘Gaia’ the Greek goddess of Mother Earth, is an ode to feminine energy, the raw creative force from which all artistry is born. 

This sentiment is personified by the four stand-out singer/songwriters who have contributed to this EP – Isheeta Chakravarty, Bawari Basanti, Avneet Khurmi and Amira Gill. Each of them have collaborated with Anish to create a sound that is emotive and evocative. A series of Instagram and Spotify discoveries resulted in this collaborative journey – one layered with unique textures owing to Anish’s unconventional use of classical vocals with contemporary house and techno production.

What started off as an experimental project during lockdown turned into a process of transformation with Anish finding himself gravitating towards this new sound. “It’s almost like this transition was meant to happen at this point in time” says Anish, and that led to the name Anyasa which means “spontaneous and effortless” in Sanskrit.

Having started his music career in 2008 at the age of 18, Anish played a huge part in shaping the dance music scene in India and is no stranger to the global platform. At the forefront of the electronic music movement in the country, he’s toured alongside a wide array of acts ranging from Dixon and Black Coffee to David Guetta and Kygo, while performing at global festivals including Tomorrowland Unite and Electric Daisy Carnival as well as co-writing a song with the Black Eyed Peas. 

However, this EP marks a special milestone. Anish is the first Indian artist to be signed to Anjunadeep, the label founded by Above & Beyond and named after the infamous Anjuna Beach in Goa, close to where Anish lives. On being the first artist from India to appear on the label Anish talks about how “Anjunadeep is a globally revered label and a dream for any electronic musician to work with” and that “I couldn’t have dreamt of a better home for this EP”.

This collaboration has been a long time coming, as both of us have been busy on the road and stuck in our own projects, but finally after talking about making something together in the studio, we did it!

This track is a mad mixture of styles that we both really like. The track starts off in a techno groove, the listener quite unaware of what is to come. Then around a minute into the track the sitar shines its rays and kicks the track off into a completely different direction – more progressive trance – fat, outdoor sounds that cannot be ignored. The track has rising 303 inspired acid leads flirting with a voice and the sunshine sitar. As if that wasn’t enough, the track takes another turn around three minutes in, there’s some reggae licks that twist into dub step with some fat fat baselines, and spits out mayhem all over whatever you had heard earlier. Around four minutes in comes some mental psychedelic beats dancing with the sparkling sitar – then back to the techno groove as if nothing happened before – psychedelic leads and pads rising upward towards the sky – then at five and half minutes the track lights up like a flare – glowing brightly with a Indian flavour.
