Lynx are one of the northern hemisphere’s most distinctive and impressive felines. Elusive and mystical, many cultures have celebrated lynx for their keen eyesight. In fact their name is thought to be derived from the Greek word for ‘brightness’, inspired by the reflective shine from their eyes. Their instantly-recognisable tufty ears, fashionable neck scarves and wide paws let them thrive in cooler and snowy regions. Lynx are threatened by habitat loss, which has left populations isolated and fragmented. It’s not all bad news - intense conservation efforts are helping lynx numbers claw their way back. Now (if you’re extremely lucky) you might spot one in wild areas from Spain to the Himalayas.
