Danny Carroll, one third of the band Shrug Life, is also one of the minds behine A Litany Of Failures: Volume II, an ambitious 18-track compilation of new music by independent bands from across the country. Aimed at providing a diverse document of often overlooked music from around the country, the compilation features new tracks from indie-pop acts such as No Monster Club and Dott as well as rising acts Hot Cops, Any Joy and Postcard Versions, plus lots more. I talked to Danny about how the compilation came together, the logistics behind it and why he wanted to gather these acts on vinyl.

TPOE 93: Danny Carroll (Shrug Life/A Litany Of Failures)

Following on from recent single Unspeak, The Signal Drops finds the Irish trio exploring different territory - fusing afrobeat rhythms and sharp guitar melodies with dense modular synth textures.

Subplots recently expanded to become a three-piece, with drummer and composer Ross Chaney joining existing members Phil Boughton and Daryl Chaney. “The Signal Drops” was one of the first songs the trio wrote together, Ross explains: "The song was written when we were playing live promoting the last album. I was just playing around with some Tony Allen inspired grooves in rehearsal, and finally settled on these patterns. It became something we’d start rehearsals with - and gradually the song grew around the drum patterns. It felt like a blueprint for a new way of working, which was really exciting."
