Irish band Subplots has announced the release of a new single on April 27th through Cableattack Records!!.

Equal parts haunting and ambitious, Unspeak is the band’s first release with a new expanded line-up.

Now a trio, drummer and composer Ross Chaney has joined Subplots as a contributing member. Brother of bassist and keyboard player Daryl Chaney, Ross has played live with the band since the release of their acclaimed album Autumning in 2015.

Subplots are now based between Ireland and Canada, with vocalist Phil Boughton currently living in Toronto.

Unspeak began as a live recording of the trio – on guitar, bass synth and two busted old ARP synthesizers providing bass drum and hi-hat sounds. Vocalist Phil Boughton recalls, “The song grew around this simple skeletal recording of the three of us playing in a room. It shifted, and evolved over time with new parts added – but still that original foundation of the recording has remained intact.”

The band had access to some very unusual synths while recording the track, the rarest of which – a Synton Syrinx – is a big feature of Unspeak. “Only a few hundred of these Dutch synths were ever made, they now sell for tens of thousands. It’s definitely one of the weirdest, most interesting and inspiring synths we've ever used.” Phil says.

Unspeak is released on April 27th and will be available on all online music platforms.

Danny Carroll, one third of the band Shrug Life, is also one of the minds behine A Litany Of Failures: Volume II, an ambitious 18-track compilation of new music by independent bands from across the country. Aimed at providing a diverse document of often overlooked music from around the country, the compilation features new tracks from indie-pop acts such as No Monster Club and Dott as well as rising acts Hot Cops, Any Joy and Postcard Versions, plus lots more. I talked to Danny about how the compilation came together, the logistics behind it and why he wanted to gather these acts on vinyl.
