Having teased the initial album release with the gain-cranking self titled ‘The Pink Noise’, Shunkan are ready to unveil an equally heavy - yet, this time on heart - second helping of their debut album with "Paleontologist".
 
The lo-fi dust from their sell-out debut 'Honey Milk and Blood' EP – critically-acclaimed by NME, DIY, Brooklyn Vegan and bloggers worldwide – has been truly blown away with big guitars, big drums, and even bigger choruses as Shunkan transformed itself from the bedroom project of 21-year-old LA-born (but NZ based) Marina Sakimoto to an unmistakably natural full band affair.
 
With the sessions recorded in Lyttleton, Christchurch NZ, Sakimoto says of the record “the inspiration was honesty and clarity, and the struggle of keeping your demons at bay. The lyrics are vulnerable and straight forward with hints of abstract imagery and setting.”

The Portland act’s fourth offering is a sweeping, playful and vulnerable collection that’s ripe with both musical and personal discovery. From the intimate, contemplative verses of the Spanish-language title track to the revelations delivered over the loping beats of “Ostrich,” this is an album that’s painstakingly produced while remaining emotionally raw.
Throughout the collection, Y La Bamba front woman Luz Elena Mendoza returns to themes of searching, metamorphosis, shared humanity and for a faith that is greater than just religion. 
Born in San Francisco, she spent her childhood summers playing in the orchards of California’s San Joaquin Valley with her cousins, and it was there that she soaked up the melodies and stories that were being told through traditional folk songs with three-part harmonies.
These are songs built to soundtrack coming to grips, not just with one’s own mortality, but with the fragility of the world. This is heady, emotional fare, and “this record is about being a mother to these emotions,” Mendoza says.
“I am thankful for all of my hardships,they have guided me to find rest in my soul, time after time. Over and over again.”

The track is lifted from their debut self-titled 7”, which will be out November 10th on Anti Fade, just in time for a national tour of Australia as part of Gizzfest. Parsnip are four girls from Melbourne whom have only been around for a year, but have certainly kept themselves busy during that time, playing plenty of great shows in Melbourne, as well as the rest of Australia on many stellar lineups. An extended play record, offered referred to as an EP, is a musical recording that contains more tracks than a single, but is usually unqualified as an album or LP. EPs usually do not contain as many tracks as albums, & are considered "less expensive & time consuming" for an artist to produce than an album. An EP originally referred to specific types of vinyl records other than 78 rpm standard play (SP) & LP, but it is now applied to mid-length CDs and downloads as well. Beginning in the 1980s, many so called "singles" have been sold in formats with more than two tracks. Because of this, the definition of an EP is not determined only by the number of tracks or the playing time; an EP is typically seen as four (or more) tracks of equal importance as opposed to a four-track single with an obvious A side & three B-sides.
