Confined Space stems from the idea of repurposing audio material from YouTube, in an artistic process that values quantity over quality. Random videos are selected using different key words and their audio is chopped and compressed into the DAW to be used as compositional elements. Often scrolling down to get the uploads with the least views, this process is both a reflection on the enormous quantity of material that can be found online and an invitation to use and repurpose digital content in new artistic ways. What is inside the database is not important, its size already makes for an infinite output of ideas.

Luca Favaro is an Italian musician and composer. Starting as a classical percussionist, he approaches electronic music composition finding his roots in sound design, club music and field recording. With the moniker T.U. he has published with False Industries (Berlin), Hide Productions (Milan, Udine) and World Canvas (Helsinki) as well as scoring music for installations, theatre and ballet. He currently hosts Desktop Music, a monthly show on radio Raheem where he explores sound design and generative music through original compositions. With the dance-focused project Capiuz, Favaro investigates a more rhythmic approach to his compositions, exploring the more experimental and hypnotic sides of dance music. As a programmer, he has created various Max for Live devices published by Hide Productions in an ongoing series.

Cicada is a time manipulation effect that warps and smears audio in real time. The device is divided into two independent sections: SCRMBL creates a cloud like texture by running the incoming sound through a cascade of modulating delays, with the possibility of adding extra pitch shifted layers. WARP imitates the warp feature on Ableton’s clips, with a grain/speed control and the possibility of having it synced and retriggered according to live’s tempo.

A year after 'Biotic Network', we’re delighted to announce yet another addition to our UNITED series - which for each EP, one member of the GUN community collaborates freely with other artists of their choice.

For this one, it’s a real pleasure to welcome long-time collaborator HeedLess from Italy, inviting over three guests from the contemporary club music scene : DJ GÄP, Lithe & POL100, whose abilities to sculpt sharp, intense and yet sensitive productions have already convinced many labels worldwide.

'Senti/Mental Illness' is an attempt to describe and analyze the end of relationships and their subsequent evolutions, including the creation of new ones with other people and environments. It results from an in-depth research for sounds and rhythms to illustrate the associated behavioral phases, blending disparate club elements, confused hypermelodic textures, and distorted voices to invite the listener in a deeply personal journey. 

After the soft synths and harshly destructive impacts of 'Pulverem Reverteris', followed by the utterly confusing sonic layers of 'Collision Course', the EP embraces the conflicting territory of 'Love Carenza', at once puzzled and thrilled. It concludes with the beautiful 'BROKEUP', merging running drum breaks with cavernous synths and shouts, emerging back from the depth of the psyche to reach closure and acceptance. More than a cathartic exercise, 'Senti/Mental Illness' is a flesh-flaying rune, providing anchors and support on the way towards maturity and wisdom.

DECISIONS is pleased to welcome Hong Kong based producer ASJ to the label with ‘The Illusion Of Separation’. Deploying a blistering and emotive sonic palette, ASJ explores emotional alienation, difference and the social unity that nonetheless binds us — themes that are especially pertinent in the wake of Hong Kong’s recent political upheaval and the COVID-19 pandemic.

The journey begins with ‘Melancholy’, a distortion-streaked meditation on loneliness and isolation. The richly melodic ‘Pendulum’ speaks to the potential for personal growth that stems from an awareness of the cyclical nature of positive and negative mind states. Imagining life as a video game, ’The Game Host’ features playfully twisted vocals and syncopated percussion to evoke agency beyond systemic rules, while ’Chant To Eternity’ offers an ultra tough sonic aid to personal empowerment by drawing on the spiritually cleansing power of chanting. ‘Sublimity’ completes the release. Arcing from musique concrete into ethereal vocals before arriving at a hypnotically elevated plateau, ASJ considers changes of state in the field of chemistry as an analogue to moments of transcendence in our daily lives.

A distilled and ambitious body of work that captures the deeply personal, social and metaphysical realms, ‘The Illusion Of Separation’ is an affecting and timely new entry into ASJ’s catalogue. A ‘Magic Eye’ style stereogram artwork (view at a large size!) further embodies the illusory and cosmic dimensions of the release.
