Mattia Prete has been at the heart of Techno Jazz a new musical movement where the freeform improvisation and instrumentation of jazz meets the futuristic and hypnotic mechanics of techno. Prete has been working in this niche as a DJ, live performer, and producer, but also as manager of Jazz-o-Tech, the innovative and well-known label based in Berlin and Milan that is home to many upcoming visionary talents.

Prete now lays out his unique vision of Techno Jazz on a first EP under his own name for Jazz-o-Tech itself. Three of the forward-thinking tracks are collaborations with musicians Prete admires and respects, and one is a remix from Reeko the Spanish techno producer.

After releasing Silent Rain EP as part of the Beat Movement duo, Prete now fully steps out with a bold representation of his take on the fascinating techno-jazz sound. It is cinematic and expansive, heady yet physical, and builds bridges between the famous Berlin sound and the exciting new developments happening in his native Italian scene.

'Moon, Please Don't Go Away' with composer and multi-instrumentalist Alberto Fiori pairs heavy, spacious bass hits with a rousing lead synth. It is epic, suggestive, and a real call to arms before the pummeling kick drums charge into cosmic battle. 'The Bright Side' with the great French trans-jazz band Bada-Bada slowly but surely gets you in a trance. The drums are powerful and liner, but the jazz sax up top is loose and liquid. It unfolds with increasing tension before the energy dissipates and you've left adrift in space next and the sax returns as a more friendly presence. Mattia then links with jazz pianist Uri Gincel and producer and guitar player Daniel Calvi for 'Burning Man,' which was previously a part of the This is Techno Jazz Vol. 1 compilation and is a deep, dark, and brooding track full of eerie suspense.

Daniel Calvi is also the collaborator on 'Stein'. It is a track dense with ideas - the train-track drums, the tortured keys, the waves of synth, then a stunning acoustic guitar solo that brings beauty and hope. Last of all, dark industrial techno maestro Reeko remixes 'Stein' into a thumping and cavernous groove with twisted synths that drag you into a dystopian future.

This is a landmark EP from an artist who is helping to take techno into innovative new realms.

Electronic dreamer Mattia Prete opens 2022 with “Life Is Waiting” on the Faith Disciplines label. His six track offering lands this year and is another mesmerising trip to the outer edges of the techno world.

Faith Disciplines is a sublabel of Subsist Records, and focused on more experimental sound territories.

Prete grew up in Lecce, Italy but is now based in Berlin where he runs his own studio as well as managing the cultured aurora. and jazz-o-tech labels. He is someone who always imbues his music with deep, personal feelings as well as a love of sci-fi, the freeform nature of jazz and avant-garde sound design. In 2021 Prete layed out his unique vision of Techno Jazz on a first EP called “Moon, Please Don’t Go Away” for Jazz-o-Tech itself. Three of the forward-thinking tracks are collaborations with musicians Prete admires and respects, and one is a remix from Reeko the Spanish techno producer. The risk taking DJ was also formerly part of the Beat Movement duo that appeared on releases with artists like Oscar Mulero, Stanislav Tolkachev and SHXCXCHCXSH as well as playing in Europe's most quality night clubs. He knows exactly how to craft loopy music that you never want to end.

Prete opens up with guitarist Daniel Calvi, and Scott Martingell, the singer from the Blue Foundation band who was part of the original Twilight movie soundtrack. Their 'I Wanna Dance' breaks out on a broken beat that is powered by squealing, tortured guitar sounds. It's a new rave sound that is expertly designed before 'Sacre Scuole': a lo-fi, grainy tension before hulking great drums take over and drive onwards under artfully pained and melancholic synths.

Prete then, links up with 'Maledetto Me,' a haunting piece of interplanetary ambiance with a pulsing and urgent rhythm buried deep down below.


The 'El Cairo' track contains Egyptian reflections on the period in history when wars raged in Cairo, as interpreted by Reda Youssef. It is another suspenseful and atmospheric builder with booming bass, razor sharp hi hats glistening in the shadows and a sense foreboding building from start to finish. The excellent 'Life Is Waiting' ups the ante further with a twisted sonar pulse spraying over loose, rumbling drums that canter along a pace that really invites you to move your body. Last of all, ' The Fear of The Greatest' feat. Mataya Waldenberg then brings clunking machine sounds and eerie solar winds to a dystopian techno landscape where a mysterious female vocal drifts in and out of focus up top.

Brilliant, dramatic and intriguing, this is an all consuming and thoroughly stylish new EP

Mattia Prete returns to Jazz-o-Tech with a new EP that emphasises the power of collaboration. His dark, abstract Eruption EP blends electronic and jazz sounds and features musicians from the label roster across five edgy tracks. Prete has been expanding his musical horizons in recent years. After building a solid foundation in techno, he has begun to work across a wider world of electronic and organic sounds while also working closely with formally trained
musicians, plenty of whom feature on this EP.

'Solar Approach' ft Alegros rides on rubbery kick drums and has sweeping chords that reach up to the sky where twinkling melodies awake. There's a halfway switch up when breakbeats change the groove and sombre trumpets sweep across the mix.

Jazz-o-Tech is a label that draws on the rich heritage of two of the most visionary and experimental genes in music: jazz and techno. Decoder is an emergent Dallas producer whose 1st appearances arrived in 2021 with a trio of albums, including Dark Shape on Mills’ mighty Axis, followed by further full lengths & numerous EPs on respected imprints such as Holland’s Float, Detroit’s Blank Code, and untouchable techno tastemakers Delsin, plus his own Toca, co-run with NYC-based Jay York, whose similarly hyperactive productivity defines their alliance. Already known across the US thanks to Hawtin’s From Our Minds tour, his worldwide notice is sure to increase with each high-profile release. From Another Star harnesses the stargazing end of his already-alien sound sphere on Vinveli, five tracks of midtempo trips saturated in extraterrestrial atmosphere.  
Cycling bleeps in ‘Gasui’ serve to enforce stasis over motion as he elegantly assembles a dynamic orbital system, with gaseous, evaporating clouds brushed aside to reveal its insistently chugging inner works. Dense, dark, and unstable, ‘Drona’ voyages through the center of a freshly-exploded supernova nebula still expanding rapidly, with deadly detritus flashing past the viewscreens. A rippling, zapping lead carves its way through the center of ‘447’, continuously assuming unfamiliar shapes while rotating elements surrounding it create organic, evolving forms. ‘Standing’ displays the pulsating, eroded tones and sparse percussion touch that defines his style, its midrange a bath of reverb wash while subtle, changeable elements intertwine. Forward movement is almost an afterthought: this is music of drift, a broken warp drive stranded in deep space while anxiety builds throughout the crew. ‘Service’ ends on a more strident tone, an eight-minute epic whose rising momentum blasts its astronauts firmly past our solar system into unsettling isolation.

INTERVIEW
Was there a specific track, night, or experience that sparked your interest in electronic music or techno?

A moment that truly shifted my perspective was the first time I stepped into this small club in my city. It was intimate, niche, carefully curated. Up until then, I had been used to much larger, more mainstream venues. But this place was different, was dark, raw, with a wall of Funktion-Ones pushing out this bleepy, hypnotic techno. That night, I realized what I was really after, where my ambition was pointing.
If I had to name one track that first sparked that feeling, and still in some ways embodies the vision I’ve held onto ever since, it would be Exium - Subshell (Pfirter Remix). It has everything: tension, groove, and that spatial depth that made me fall in love with techno.

In what way did your move from Italy to Amsterdam influence your musical journey? What motivated that change at the time?

Absolutely. The decision to move was entirely driven by music. That was, and still is, my main focus. I’ve always dreamed big, and I couldn’t accept giving up this passion just because I wasn’t in the right place - or living with that “what if” in my head.
Then, as often happens, other signs and circumstances made things even clearer.
Once I got here, the environment played a big role. It pushed me. I arrived alone, with no connections, but being surrounded by certain energies constantly motivates you to do more, evolve, and learn something every day. Above all, this is where I truly learned what it means to persevere - no matter what.

Are there specific moods or energies you intentionally try to capture when producing – and if so, how do those emotions shape your workflow or your studio setup?

Maybe I’m a bit particular, but when I produce, I try to leave my moods outside. I overthink a lot, and making music helps me shut the world off and tune into myself.
When I hit that flow and things move on their own, that’s when it works. 
The hardest part isn’t usually the technical side, but quieting the mind and finding full focus. The energy in a track reflects me in the most honest way. When everything clicks - when I find a natural, simple workflow that still tells a story - that’s when I feel truly satisfied.

It reflects heavily on today’s scenarios, polarising views, polarising emotions, uncertain futures, but there is a hint of hope still flickering in the darkness. Like the moment when light appears from behind a storm cloud.

I love the artwork for this, it reminds me to lean into the things that give us hope or keep us together. Even when there is a lot of evil.

Mattia Prete is a Berlin-based DJ, producer, band member, and label manager whose ambitious electronic music is deeply influenced by club styles such as techno and electronica, merged with intricate jazz rhythms and organic instrumentation.

As a DJ, Prete has a versatile sound, and his sets tell a sonic story, taking the audience on a transcendental journey that keeps mind and body engaged on the dancefloor. His mixes incorporate intelligent, dreamy, fluid, and eclectic genres, including techno, jazz, IDM, tribal, and broken beat, all built on strong, propulsive grooves.

In the studio, Prete’s work is infused with sci-fi futurism and the immersive scope of film soundtracks, producing a unique sound that has gained international acclaim. He debuted with “Moon, Please Don’t Go Away” in 2020 on Jazzotech, the label he manages, and has since released the vinyl EP “Life is Waiting” on the experimental label Faith Disciplines, as well as singles like “Palettes” and “Zamovliannia,” featuring classical musicians from Dnipro’s Philharmonic.

Prete recently co-founded the 505 band project with Daniel Calvi, exploring electronic rhythms with a sensitive trip-hop sound and incorporating live electronics and organic instruments for a trippy, textured experience.

As label manager and A&R of Jazzotech, Prete has laid the foundation for a new club scene called Techno Jazz, producing original music and live events featuring jazz and electronic musicians.

One of his most notable projects is the double LP “This is Techno Jazz,” featuring collaborations between artists like Stanislav Tolkachev with Finnish band Himanen & Kinnunen, Katharina Ernst with Spanish techno innovator Reeko, Tensal with Turin jazz band TUN, Fabrizio Rat, and trombonist Gianluca Petrella. This project also inspired a party of the same name, held at Kantine Am Berghain and Sage Beach, with legends like Matthew Herbert, Fabrizio Rat, and Studnitzky.

Prete has played at renowned clubs and festivals, including Montreux Jazz Festival, Fusion Festival, Kantine Am Berghain, Jazz:Re:Found Festival, and Tresor Berlin.
