Out on Juno for one week on April 15th until the following Monday for a general release. 
Ohmtrix is known for his Dubstep and Drum and Bass, the EP caters for both of these. Self titled track Image welcomes us into a warm ambience until the skippy snares roll into play alongside battle ready mid-range synths its then that we are reminded why Ohmtrix is a sonic force to be reckoned with. Next up in the promo audio is Tearing Me Down which enters with a sinister undertone and hi-hat, the title vocal fights through the mix before the onslaught of percussion hits us. Precise rhythms focus the energy whilst metallic synths punish from all angles and the rolling beat moves the track forward to the next vocal hook.
After the first two halftime tracks we step things up in tempo to something more Drum and Bass influenced with the next two. All Alone creeps in with a lush vocal and guitar riffs, after the beat enters we continue the smooth but tough feel to this one with more guitar melodies, perfect for those late nights. Lastly on the EP we move to Myriad, a beast-infused Drum and Bass nightmare. It features resilient, saturated mid-range and sub-bass to shake just about any dance, all together the EP has a broad range of styles, Ohmtrix really provides a unique offering with his music and what a perfect fit it is for the label also.

The release opens with the reversed samples and mystical atmospheres which form the intro of Laid to Rest; a minimal, weighty number which encompasses Sepia’s signature sound of melodic, gloomy bass music. But it’s the second drop of this track that really makes it stand out – using innovative arrangements Sepia catches you off guard with an onslaught of powerful sub bass and head-nodding percussive patterns; the kind of switch-up that makes you fiend for a track ID when you hear it in a mix.

The B-side is Remember – deviating from his usual style, Sepia shows us he’s not afraid to switch things up once in a while and delivers us an old school, Deep Medi-esque wobbler while retaining the keen ear for melody and percussive innovation he’s made a name for himself with. Definitely one for the dance floors and a perfect juxtaposition with the relaxing nature of the A-Side.

The release concludes with the digital bonus track Separation; here he returns to the atypical Sepia sound with another chilled out cut, featuring low-passed reese like bass lines, looped ambience, and of course top quality percussive workouts.

It’s not often that you get a two track release featuring four established solo artists, but that’s exactly what Banana Stand Sound are offering with their latest 180gr 12” outing. As their slogan suggests, there’s always bass in the Banana Stand, and this release from OldGold, The Widdler, Helktram and Karnage is no exception.

The A side comes from none other than social media rascal and co-owner of Silent Motion Records, Oldgold, and dubstep community pillar The Widdler. When he’s not up to no good doing things like spoiling the last Star Wars movie on Facebook, Rolando, – aka OldGold – produces a raw, no holds-barred iteration of dubstep which can be heard in his collaboration with American dubstep pioneer and legendary TwitchTV streamer The Widdler.

A heavily processed sample in typical Widdler style from an episode of Star Trek attempts to prepare you for a journey into ‘another dimension’ in the intro of Imperial, but it’s difficult to be prepared for the onslaught of tribal drums, lush chords, and of course, some of that Banana Stand bass that follows. The track makes exceptional use of tension and release, and empty spaces; something to be expected from a track involving veteran The Widdler; but if you’ve been following Oldgold’s music during his rise to prominence in the last few years, you’d know it’s something he makes good use of in his own productions as well.

On the flip side we see the two Encrypted Audio signees from Japan – Helktram and Karnage – team up on ‘Rat Catcher’; an almost psychedelic, spooked out skanker with a militant rhythm and a gorgeous lead melody; reminiscent of the creepy tones of everyone’s favourite Pokémon graveyard, Lavender Town. With springy reverberations and wobbly sub basses, it’s what you’d forsee from such a powerful combination of producers, and it’s living proof that the Japanese bass music scene is alive and well – newcomer Helktram is definitely one to watch in 2016, and the more established Karnage is still going strong.

Light starts off with energetic, crisps hi-hats and Monika Emat gives the title track vocal an angelic yet haunting feel as an underlying guitar-like lick takes us through to the drop. Effective immediately is the almost broken-CRT-television white noise crunch of a snare pushing through the mix adding to the dark aesthetic of the track, whilst a mid-frequency synth groans back amongst the sub-bass pressure. Rave-esque stabs make themselves known in the breakdown whilst Monika's tones continue to keep us warm and feeling safe until the twisted mind of Demon ensues with a brutal twist in percussion and mid-frequency groans on the second drop.

The second track on the release brings Narkotiks (Overdose VIP), the original saw a 12" white label release on the label last year as the A-side with Sex Tape ft. Beezy on the flip. The Overdose VIP pays homage to the original with an all too familiar introduction, until siren-like screams drain all resemblance away and bring us to the drop which then gives a slaughterous +1 to original definitely earning the "Overdose" title. The percussion in the track opens a window back to the hardcore and jungle rave scene of the 90s although perhaps processed into an unrecognisable brutal 140bpm rhythm, the vocal also keeps the lo-fi feel to the track which is certainly a welcome addition. Although often labeled as Dubstep, Demon keeps reminding us that we can push the boundaries of music and both tracks on this release definitely prove that.

Animal Kingdom EP marks the tenth release for Imperial Audio, a label which strives on pushing an exciting, consistent style of dubstep and experimental music at or around 140bpm. With four years behind the imprint, their first double figure release marks a step forward and represents the ethos of Imperial as a whole.

Crystal Catcha provides the release with four tracks all centred around a very much animalistic and primal sounding ascetic, with a back catalogue of releases this South East, UK based producer certainly keeps away from the hype that captures so many producers these days and supplies something which is homegrown and original. After a long line of more ambient and electronica style releases that also hint to dubstep Jayson is taking a look to the more deep and dark dubstep whilst keeping it experimental in this EP.

The first track on the release, Crane & Tiger, gives a nod to Hip Hop in the almost sample like synth arrangement. It captures the asian sample well and works around the vocal with eastern strings, and ‘falling over itself’ percussion. 808 kicks punch through the low end and shuffling top frequencies break through the mix on a forward march. 

Title track on the EP is exactly as it suggests, although not the track that first incepted the EP idea it certainly glues it together nicely. Bird calls, raws of the king of the jungle and atmospherics lead you through whilst tough lows balance things against the rattle like percussion on top of the steady kick pattern.  
Locusts is a real look back to what Dubstep as a genre began as, a focus on the low frequencies but with a twist. It evolves throughout with simple snappy drums and a bass line that just harvests a head nod. The real action comes from the second drop, this track is the ‘mover’ of the EP.

Lastly, Endgame closes the release with game-esque synths rising in and out of the track and almost horror movie organ sounds. It keeps in context with the rest of the EP percussion-wise with clean steady percussive patterns throughout.
