Story time of where my head’s been at:
A year ago I was set on quitting music. A lot of the reasons stemmed from constant self-criticism and fear of what others thought of my work. In 2019/2020 I became obsessed with getting my songs signed to labels because, when they did, it was satisfying. Getting an “official” stamp of approval and seeing play numbers orders of magnitude larger than I’d seen before was incredibly validating. 

But it also made my expectations grow. I built up so much of my identity around music, so that when I felt like my music didn’t meet my expectations, I didn’t meet my expectations. My motivation for making music switched from curiosity, emotional release, and passion to mere validation from play stats. And living in a world that glamorizes being productive at all times made me feel like music was a side-hustle/work. All of this made me hate music. I hated listening to it and I hated producing it. 

Which is so absurd saying it now. I took a long break from producing and gave myself time to reflect. My attitude toward music has reset. “shaded” was purely an outlet for the emotions I was feeling when writing it (oh and @highimjetson heavily inspired the sound design). Happy to break through this funk, and looking forward to making music again :)
