The Past… is the first of three EPs leading up to the fourth studio album from prolific, Indie MC, Substantial. This time around the veteran wordsmith has partnered with HiPNOTT Records producer duo and fellow Maryland natives, The Other Guys for his latest release. Substantial’s musical past, pre-Hyde Out Productions, included many collaborations with Isaiah of TOG, which makes their project’s title quite fitting. The Past… features Von Pea of Tanya Morgan, Substantial’s protegé, See King, cuts from DJ Jav and plenty of that soulful boom bap The Other Guys have been known to provide. Lyrically, Substantial is as sharp as ever and covers subjects such as the dying art of MCing, dreams limited by stereotypes, and the exploitation of his former producer, Nujabes. 

Substantial’s full length album The Past Is Always Present In The Future drops fourth quarter 2015. Until then, enjoy this appetizer and look forward to more flavorful Hip Hop music to feed your soul.

"Work Ethic Mixtape"として知られていたこの作品は、完成されてる曲もあれば完成されてないレアなラフ音源まで、2006年以前にJoe StylesがBudamunkやDibiaseの家などでレコーディングでしてきた音源集である。
ほとんどがJoe Styles本人のビートのものだが、Budamunk, Dibiase, N/A, Laidlaw, Emphasisなどもプロダクションで参加している。10年前の作品"Melodical era"にも参加していた従兄弟のSoulやOYGやChali 2naの弟のLaidlawなども率いる自信のクルーSoul JugglerzのMCたちなどが参加している。
Joe StylesはロスアンゼルスのMCで10代の半ば頃からLailawなどと活動をはじめ、2002年にソロアルバム"Melodical Era"をリリース。後にKeentokers, Soul Jugglerzとして活動を始める。2009年にBudamunkと2004年頃に録ったアルバム"Budastyles Classics"をJazzy Sportからリリース。Green Butterのアルバム"Get Mad Relax"にも参加している。

These recordings on this particular project were once known as the "Work Ethic Mixtape". These songs, mostly Joe Style productions, and a few bangers from Budamunk, Dibiase, N/A, Laid Law, and Emphasis, some complete, some incomplete, and a few left alone-were constructed @budamunk's fonk house, Dibiase's Lab, and at the Soul Jugglerz Dusty Dungeon. They were gathered from numerous studio sessions, mostly the year of 2006, with some dating back early as 2003. All the tracks were compiled onto a compact disc and given to Joe Styles Keentoker brethren Budamunk. It was only for friends to listen to, but one day while Budamunk was blowing on some Bomb Tree, he thought it'd be dope for the world to hear. About the album:
The DMV rapper Substantial has been ripping mics for years. Starting with the self made label U.V. Ink, he began making his mark on the game. His debut solo did well everywhere but particularly in Japan where he hit the Top 10. This success set off a career touring Asia that led the emcee to touch down in Taiwan, China, Japan and more – not to mention Europe and almost all of North America. As things began to get busier he linked with QN5 to focus solely on artistic creation. His collaborations have been equally profound including work with the legendary DJ Kool Herc, Bootsy Collins, Chew Fu, Cunninlynguists, and even an appearance on Bruce Kulick's (of KISS) album alongside all-star rocker Gene Simmons. His videos have appeared on MTV, BET, and VH1, while his music has made it to the second round of Grammy voting in 3 categories. Even the renowned car company Bentley reached out to have Substantial create a song for them and perform in China at their car show. Vogue Magazine included his music in a recent playlist. Not bad for the PG County rapper who has also contributed heavily to his community's well being by way of building recording studios for disadvantaged youth in conjunction with the Covenant House and raising money for school music programs in VH1's Save The Music Series. For his newest album "Home Is Where The Art Is" (Mello Music Group) Substantial enlisted the help of executive producer Oddisee who also arranged & mixed the record and contributed a large portion of the production. And that's just the start, no wonder they call him Substantial.
