BLK affect sonically encapsulates afterlives of feeling and emotion from the lens of a descendant of enslaved africans colonized in the so-called united states. the music connects to this h(is)tory and provokes a cacophony of sounds, some translatable, others still yet to be decoded. the purpose of this radio show is to conduct and share in an experience of Black excellence and experimentation primarily with analogue means (records and cassettes), and sound/field recordings for texture and context to emotions experienced while listening. 

the first mix in this series of mixes is called “shadow gratitude.affect”, a call to embracing our shadow-self. with intention and attention to grief and crisis in our dark (shadow) selves, this mix intends to lean into those feelings with gratitude transmuted through a pulse of joy and despair.

aired on Montez Press Radio 5/25/23, “temporality of water”, explores various truths/myths regarding the atlantic ocean, transatlantic slave trade, traversing the spacial and temporal dimensions of human interference in complex ecosystems, and delineating it's Black affects. water holds the most space and mass of this planet. human beings are also mostly made of water. water holds our h(is)tory and has capacity for holding our grief. could stirring the deep offer reckoning in the murkiness? this stirring of brief and infinite moment(s) of shared ancestral trauma, is lending a life raft in a sense, of sonic vibrations that disrupts h(is)tory and forms new pathway(s) of individual and collective healing; shattering the trauma loop ∞.

recorded this back when i was on the WMPR 90.1 fm radio in Jackson Mississippi playing reggae on Saturday nights from 6pm to 6am with my O.G., International Farmer.

he was able to record some of the sessions on cassettes, which were then converted to a cds, which i then mixed back down to share digitally. 

was a really special time being able to play music that was being heard all across Central Mississippi, Louisiana and Arkansas. (first time in my life i heard Grace Jones and Bad Brains being played back to back ;)

a really close friend/comrade who would come up to the studio w/ us while we recorded transitioned soon after we did this. miss him dearly. 

thought 4/20/20 would be a perfect opportunity to release/share these sessions with friends, fam, supporters quarantined rn. 

hope it lifts your spirit as you get lifted (if you partake in the festivities of this holiday/no pressure no worries lol)

i mixed and curated these sounds for mother mercy's call to create cohort, serving as both a prelude and epilogue to their discourse on interdependence & decentralization.
the mix explores what's wrong and acknowledges we are resilient AF. it’s harsh with soft content and sonically it’s madd Black. the richness of our history and our ancestry, pulling us through different situations. this mix is made for artists too—being in the zone, being in the moment. we get put into a mode that everything is fine when everything isn’t. we need love, hugs, 300 acres and shit like that..
