Berlin-based @dj_derive finds her inspiration in the relationship between urban contexts and individuals, stretching the repetitive patterns of social automations into unpredictable soundscapes. As a mimic chameleon capable of adaptive situationisms, Johanna drifts from side to side with a rich density of bass modulations, ambience vocals and rhthmic disruptions, causing emotional disorientation and physical displacement. I met Alice aka https://soundcloud.com/janloup at Chantelouve, a micro-festival in the Alps and one of my favourite annual French gatherings. As the cards predicted, we had an immediate Empress crush and our b2b was floating magic.

Jan Loup is currently on tour in a van with Maquis Son Sistèm (and their soundsystem) playing squats, DIT parties and other underground venues. In Berlin, they visited Cashmere Radio and I interviewed Jan Loup before a b2b on my monthly show Fictions.

The Berlin based DJ, production and live act duo consisting of @dj_ion & @tymotica take no prisoners in this expertly executed excursion into their sound. High energy, club ready selections strike the perfect balance between techno and bass elements, a skill that they also display in their formidable recent "Bionic Gradient" EP, out on @voitax.

I got the idea to record the mix after running a few of the @striations-night nights. I wanted it to represent all the different energies, genres and tempos which we go through during one of our nights. It’s quite hypnotic yet has a lot of that deep, danceable energy you get from sub-bass heavy music.

There’s lots of tracks inside that I play out quite regularly but it’s the first time I’ve put them all together in the way that I did. It was definitely tricky to get the balance right at times, but I’m really happy with the mix and glad it’s out on a great platform!

A lot of influence for sure comes from running the @striations-night nights. Hearing lots of great artists you admire play out, and getting to test ideas on a semi-regular basis really helps you to learn what you like. 

I’ve also put a lot of music made by friends in this mix as well. Knowing the person who made the track definitely helps make the mix feel more personal, and it’s something I always try to build into my mixes.

I started the night with a couple of friends (big up Rob and Elspeth) back in 2022 because we weren’t seeing the artists we wanted to see in a venue that we liked. Spanners was still fairly new back then and we loved the space so we went for it. Mary and Tobs who run it are the best and they’ve always been very welcoming. You can tell they really care which makes a big difference!

In terms of curation we try to keep it quite organic. We book (mostly) local artists who we really like and think complement each other nicely. I think a lot of it’s about helping the artists feel relaxed and free to explore their sound when they get on the decks.
