With a drummer for a father, and a sister who was into illegal street racing, Subtractive’s (Alex Hunt’s) childhood was anything but normal. By age 13, Alex was already hooked by the euphoric, confidence-inducing sounds of electronic dance music; “I used to beg my sister to let me ride along on races... Sometimes she would give in. The days following, I would be asking her what music her friends were listening to in the car.”

After his initial exposure, it didn’t take long for Hunt to dedicate himself to learning the art of music creation. Without means to travel to the more vibrant music scenes of Detroit or Chicago, the young producer spent his nights practicing skills such as mixing, sampling, and synthesis. As years went on, Alex began making the trek from Indiana to Detroit nearly every weekend. With a head full of production knowledge and an eagerness to experience Detroit’s underground party scene, the cards were right for Alex Hunt to undergo a musical transformation; 
this is when he became Subtractive.

Subtractive - All Bonzai Edition 2021 DJ Mix

House Music is my first love - Then came Minimal & Techno, then came Melodic Techno & Progressive House, but in this mix, we go back to my roots of Deep House music in a whopping 10 hour long marathon DJ set I recorded in my studio. I want to showcase this music that I love in a way I have not done in the past. This is also to kick off a new weekly residency at Social Misfits in Downtown Grand Rapids, MI starting on July 13th and happening every Wednesday night. On New Year's Eve 2024 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, I orchestrated a one-of-a-kind DJ set that brought the vibrant and dynamic sounds of Europe and Latin America to the heart of the Midwest. This unique mix, filled with melodic techno, progressive house, and deep/dark trance, is a fusion of styles that currently dominate the global club scenes outside of the USA.

Tracks like Vakabular and Red Machine's "Turn Off The Heat" and Khainz's "The Drift" set an electrifying tone. At the same time, Anyma's "Explore Your Future (Extended Mix)" and Kevin de Vries' "Dance With Me" introduced a sense of mystery and euphoria. The mix continued to build with powerful beats and hypnotic rhythms from artists like Duke Dumont, Nathan Nicholson, and Matt Fax, showcasing the future of rave culture with Airsand and TuraniQa's "Rave Is The Future" and Modern Brothers' "Unhole."

By bringing these worldly sounds to Kalamazoo, I aimed to represent and share Europe and Latin America's rich, diverse musical landscapes. This set celebrated cultural exchange, bridging the gap between continents through the universal language of music and offering a unique experience to a college town audience typically more familiar with the sounds of nearby Chicago and Detroit.

With a drummer for a father, and a sister who was into illegal street racing, Subtractive’s (Alex Hunt’s) childhood was anything but normal. By age 13, Alex was already hooked by the euphoric, confidence-inducing sounds of electronic dance music; “I used to beg my sister to let me ride along on races... Sometimes she would give in. The days following, I would be asking her what music her friends were listening to in the car.”

After his initial exposure, it didn’t take long for Hunt to dedicate himself to learning the art of music creation. Without means to travel to the more vibrant music scenes of Detroit or Chicago, the young producer spent his nights practicing skills such as mixing, sampling, and synthesis. As years went on, Alex began making the trek from Indiana to Detroit nearly every weekend. With a head full of production knowledge and an eagerness to experience Detroit’s underground party scene, the cards were right for Alex Hunt to undergo a musical transformation; 
this is when he became Subtractive.
