Mistakes Were Made

Subtract Music is a Los Angeles-based record label, event producer, and artist collective that has shaped the West Coast’s electronic music landscape since 2011. Founded by Anton Tumas and a small circle of like-minded friends, Subtract was built as a platform for forward-thinking artists—emerging and established alike—driven by a belief in music that lasts beyond the moment.

The label’s debut, Black Rock City by a then-rising DAVÍ, paired with a remix from Robert Babicz, set the tone for its identity: atmospheric, meticulous, and unconcerned with trends. From there, Subtract followed a deliberately measured path, curating a catalog that spans deep house, techno, and electronica. Standout moments include Pezzner’s melancholic Evelyn, Babicz’s infectious Beautiful, and Vinayak A’s experimental Set Her Free, alongside remixes from John Digweed, Hernán Cattáneo, Guy J, Matthew Dekay, and Stimming. The interplay between newcomers and seasoned veterans has become a defining feature of the label.

Beyond the studio, Subtract is equally known for its events. Its long-running Subtract On The Pier residency—now in its 10th season—has brought artists from Mathew Jonson and Lee Burridge to Patrice Bäumel and Doc Martin to Long Beach waterfront. As producer of the Love Long Beach Festival, the collective helps draw over 10,000 attendees annually, balancing cutting-edge programming with a strong sense of community. Subtract sound systems have powered some of LA’s most respected underground gatherings and set new benchmarks for immersive audio at Black Rock City.

With a release schedule that favors intention over volume, Subtract Music continues to evolve while holding firm to its original ethos: quality over quantity, artistry over hype. In a culture that moves quickly, it remains a steady voice for the underground.
