grace (12:3, 6) – charis – favor, benefit

soberly (12:3) – sophroneo – to be of sound mind.  In one’s right mind; to think and act with sound judgment.

dealt (12:3) – merizo – from meris, a part.  To divide; to distribute.

gifts (12:6) – charismata (charisma, singular) – a gift of grace, an undeserved benefit.  The suffix –ma indicates the result of grace.  Used specifically of the spiritual graces imparted to the Body of Christ by the Holy Spirit.

prophecy (12:6) – propheteia –OT prophets were particularly involved in the foretelling of future events under divine influence, including declarations, exhortations and warnings.  The gift of prophecy within the Body of Christ involved not as much foretelling, but more forth telling of the word of God, as revealed to the prophet by the Holy Spirit.  Prophets might be associated with local assemblies, or travel as missionaries.  They edified, exhorted and comforted the Body of Christ, encouraging the local assemblies in the faith.

proportion (12:6) – analogia – from ana, denoting distribution, and logos, account.  In right relation.  

ministry (12:7) – diakonia – from diakonos, deacon, servant.  Service.  In this context, the grace of ministering in the Word of God, spoken chiefly of apostles, prophets, evangelists and teachers.

teaches, teaching (12:7) – didasko, didaskalia -  the systematic instruction in the details of the faith, and the responsibilities of it.   More elaborate instruction in the truth. The ability to interpret, clarify, systematize and explain God’s truth clearly.

exhorts, exhortation (12:8) – parakaleo, paraklesis – to call upon someone to do something; to encourage, admonish.  

gives (12:8) – metadidomi – to share with someone; to impart, communicate.  

liberality (12:8) – haplotes – from haplous, not having an ulterior or double motive.  Not liberality, but faithful benevolence out of proper motivation.  Singleness and sincerity of heart; proper and pure motivation.

But having different gifts according to the grace given to us, whether prophecy, according to the proportion of faith; or ministry, in the ministry; or the one teaching, in the teaching; or the one exhorting, in the encouragement; the one sharing, in simplicity; the one taking the lead, in diligence; the one showing mercy, in cheerfulness.
