Funky Diva Martha High has been an integral part of James Brown’s life and career for more than 30 years: she was his backing vocalist, hair stylist, payroll master and his always loyal and reliable confidant. After a lifetime spent shoulder to shoulder with the Godfather of Soul, she flew to Tokyo and teamed up with Japanese funk ambassadors Osaka Monaurail to pay homage to the great Soul Sisters of the JB’s Revue. “Tribute to My Soul Sisters” drops next November the 17th on Record Kicks.

The idea for this special project was hatched back in 2014, when she was visiting the producer Dj Pari, head honcho of the Soulpower organization and tight collaborator of soul legends like The Impressions, Lyn Collins and Marva Whitney. While reminiscing about tours with her fellow James Brown veterans, Martha felt that a tribute to the great Soul Sisters of the JB Revue, better known as “James Brown’s Original Funky Divas”, was very much needed. Without further ado, following DJ Pari’s advice, she partnered up with one of the hottest name of the new funk renaissance: Japan’s Osaka Monaurail. This unique collaboration gives new life to 13 soulful pearls, masterfully interpreted as only an Original Funky Diva can do. To name a few: “Think (About It)”, made famous by the female preacher Lyn Collins, “Mama’s Got a Bag of Her Own”, Anna King’s answer to JB “Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag” and the soul classic “Answer to Mother Popcorn” by Vicki Anderson.

"I looked up to these ladies of soul" says Martha, "Given the opportunity and the pleasure to perform their songs, is my way of saying: thank you, you're not forgotten. To record the music of the Funky Divas would mean a lot to Mr Brown. He always wanted the world to know he had powerful women on stage that could hold his crowd while he was off the stage; they were just as powerful and funky as he was."

Born in Victoria, Virginia and discovered by Rock & Roll pioneer Bo Diddley, Martha took off her career with the soulful, legendary doo-wop group "The Four Jewels”, with whom she scored the national hit 'Opportunity" in 1964. Soon, The Jewels caught the attention of James Brown and joined the “James Brown Revue” in 1966. The Godfather of Soul recorded and released several songs featuring The Jewels until the group disbanded. Nevertheless, Martha stayed with James Brown and continued to work with him as his personal vocalist for 32 years. She was with him at the Boston Garden during the iconic 1968 gig after Martin Luther King’s assassination, she was by his side when he performed at renowned ‘Rumble in The Jungle’ event in Zaire and was on stage with him and "The Legends of Rock & Roll". Mr Brown produced several of Martha’s singles on his own label “People” such as “Georgy Girl", "Try Me" and “Summertime”; meanwhile Martha launched her solo career in 1979 with the self-titled debut LP for “Salsoul Records”. Since then she released five albums under her name and, being one of the “hardest working woman in show business”, she became one of the leading singers of saxophonist Maceo Parker’s legendary funky music machine, working with him for 16 years.
Martha has been carrying the torch of soul music for her whole life, like a true Soul Sister. Now, with this new effort, she is keeping the music of the Funky Divas going, and we are sure that the Godfather of Soul and her faithful audience would appreciate it.

After his highly recommended Downbeat doublealbum „Tales from the City / Country“ in 2010, Tobitob comes back with a pocket full of new remixes in 2012.
Cram, Renegades Of Jazz, Marc ‘Dirty’ Deal, Chris Krawall, iGadget, Deja-Move, Apollo Lovemachine, Sebus and Tobitob himself reinterpreted and refreshed the music of the studio mastermind in their very own and unique style.

Deja-Move and Cram are starting up with their remixes, sounding like driving along a palmbeach on a hot summerday. Followed up by Tobitobs very own remix – a deep and excellent remake of the track „Horseback“. The entirely unreleased title „Mangare (2012 Re-Edit)“ reminds us a bit of a mixture between the „Nightridertheme“, Balkan and Electrobeats. A remarkable and strong technoid remix of „Ryhthm Rødsnek (w/ Fünf Sterne Deluxe)” was  delivered by Marc ‚Dirty’ Deal. Be surprised by the work and sound of Apollo Lovemachine, who follows his very own paths, remixing „First Sunrise (w/ DJ Coolmann (Visit Venus))“ in an avantgarde kind of way. Further journeys into Jazz or Deep House as well as Chris Krawall’s Electro orientated music are showing up the wide range of influences that are united on this remix album, ending up in a Dubstep remix by iGadget, who is showing us what the word ‚soundcollage’ can mean.

All in all this album grew into a strong, outstanding, modern and ambitioned electronic record, a must for all fans of Tobitob’s music or for those who want to get addicted to it.

Montenegro based label, Digest Music is going even more international with its new release. The french have always had a recognizably unique and raw approach to jazz-influenced music, which makes their sound stand out in the time of bypassing music trends. Raymon Lazer Trio's timeless sounding fresh groove, Lola is a perfect example of that. An impeccable blend of live instruments and samples, the track is a potential classic. Anouk Aimée's voice (borrowed from a Jacques Demy movie) all through the tune makes it steamy and sexy, kind of reinforcing the stereotype the world has of the people of France, while Sami Fathi's funky guitar riffs and Morgan Theze's catchy saxophone playing will definitely get you dancing. Lola is also a great representation of what Digest Music stands for: finding the most interesting and promising upcoming aritsts who will help us define what "all that jazz" means in 2012.

Breaking hearts and starting dance-floor fires since 2013, Sugar Fed Leopards (SFL) play sweet original music that eminates from somewhere in the sequinned space between disco, soul, doo-wop and rock n roll.

Described as “Kath and Kim on acid’, this blazing septet sizzles on stage with smoking hot costumes, tight dance moves and sweet harmonies, backed by a thumping rhythm section and soaring saxophone.

SFL launched their debut album ‘Sweet Spots’ in 2015. Riding high, the band packed a suitcase full of sequins and toured Europe making new friends and fans in Italy, Germany, France and Belgium.

In 2017, SFL hit the studio to produce their second LP, 'Take You Out Tonight'. Following a sold out launch at Howler, the album was nominated 'album of the week' on both PBS FM and 3RRR FM.

“One of the things I love about Sugar Fed Leopards is that though they're ostensibly a disco group, the minimal drums, bass, guitar, three voices and saxophone lineup, and the way they use it, makes them feel more like an early sixties rock'n'roll vocal group who stumbled upon the disco rhythm a decade and a half early." - Richie1250, Stone Love PBS FM.

In February 2018, SFL released double A-side digital single, ‘Rose’ / ‘Sugar in Her Pocket’. During the pandemic, the band were busy diligently secreting strings of musical pearls while baking bread and making babies. This time resulted in a song and film clip ode to spring, 'Flowers in the Falling Rain’ (2021) and soul banger, ‘Introducing…’ released in 2022.

SFL is now back in full swing, releasing two singles, ‘Need You Now’ (November 2023) and ‘T.Y.O.T.’ (February 2024) from their third studio album ‘Love. Be In It’; a celebration of ten years of friendship and sweet music making, set for release in April 2024.

Getting undeniably hotter over time with fresh tunes and new moves, SFL are standing by and ready to whip up an ecstatic meringue on the dance floor of your dreams.
