KOMPAKT fans should have been familiar with the name Nicky Elisabeth for some time now. At the beginning of 2019, Nicky joined the KOMPAKT family and from then on was spotted more and more often not only at KOMPAKT events, but also in the line-ups of renowned festivals (DGTL, Strafwerk, amongst others) and clubs. And who doesn't remember the legendary "Kompakt Pop Up Party" in October 2019 during the Amsterdam Dance Event, streamed live from Nicky's living room, where together with Michael Mayer and Rex The Dog she finally conquered our hearts in a flash? 

Nicky Elisabeth lives and works in Amsterdam and is one of the resident DJs of De Marktkantine, one of the most established clubs in the Dutch capital and long-time host of KOMPAKT parties of all kinds. Anyone who has experienced one of these parties there will find much of the special atmosphere and punchy sound of those nights in Nicky's KOMPAKT debut 12inch "Celeste". 

It seems obvious to interpret the two tracks "Celeste" and "Say" as a kind of loving homage to the KOMPAKT sound of the last three decades. With sparing means Nicky manages to elicit a maximum of energy and catchiness from her two tracks, always carried by a sure instinct for breaks and the right timing for small escalations - something that good DJs simply have in their blood. In the end, it's always about the dramaturgy. 

The two remixes of the title track "Celeste" from the hands of the grand masters Robag Wruhme and Roman Flügel are no less "celestial" than the original. Robag Wruhme in particular gives the piece something wonderfully floating and dreamy in his arrangement, as he also managed to do on his 12-inch "Yes/Calma Calma“ (KOM EX 115). Roman builds in little deconstructions here and there, sometimes going left, sometimes heading right, to finally let himself be carried away by the good-humoured nineties vibe. One can hardly wait to finally experience all this on the dance floor again.

Sau Poler makes his return to Atomnation with Nocturno, a debut album that finds him pushing himself beyond his usual confines. The nine immersive, meticulously crafted tracks arrive in Spring 2021 and come with original artwork by New York artist Jane Dickson.

Sau Poler is part of a so-called golden generation of Spanish producers alongside the likes of Pional, John Talabot and Bawrut. He has put out three EPs on this label before landing on others such as Mule Musiq, Modern Obscure Music and Fort Romeau's Cin Cin, where he honed his organic house, techno and ambient fusions. They're often bright but obscure, intimate and contemporary, with taut samples and shuffling beats that manage to be leftfield as well as nostalgic, and have had support from the likes of Kelly Lee Owens and Dixon. All that also plays out in his DJ sets which have taken him all over Europe to the likes of DGTL and Sonar.

This new album was recorded between 2018 and 2020 in Poler's studio in Badalona. Two years of experimentation, expanding his methods of composition and moving out of his comfort zone eventually lead to the concept of Nocturno. It's an album that draws on those special late night feelings: introspective sounds, a middle ground between lightness and dark, euphoria and loneliness. It means the music is often hypnotic and mystic, with references to the conceptual movies, sonic obscurities and the video games of his youth. Two pieces of gear were also key to shape that sound: the Roland JD800 synth and the Roland Chorus Echo-301 tape delay, which help lend the whole thing a cohesive, immersive feel, with some first ever uses of an electric guitar and trumpet also adding further colour and emotion.

" "Nocturno" helped me to break the mental barrier of recording my debut album, and more importantly, it's a record that renews my motivation to experiment and expand my music. There were some personal dark times and creativity blocks during the recording process, so I thought that going back to the essence of why I make music - capture the vibe and not overthink my compositions - would be key to finalize the album and grow as an artist. Now I feel some kind of healing to see the album finally out and I hope people will enjoy the listening."

And that shows... Opener 'Vireo' glides through the cosmos on supple bass and synth lines that are bright and golden, while a more melancholy mood strikes on Labyrinths Of The Mind, with its rasping bass and nagging beats. '4.44' is an upbeat piece of melodic electronica, while 'Strange Lands' conveys feelings of the mysterious unknown you get when darkness falls. There's a tension and tightness to the stiff kicks of 'Fuga' that is unsettling, before the rich melodies and gurgling bass of 'Ritualidad Rítmica' soothes you once more. 'Incertidumbres' is a downtempo groove for deeper thoughts, before 'La Ment Abstracte' are filled with subtle positivity and optimism to leave you feeling utterly refreshed and renewed.

Nocturno is a comforting and cathartic album of deeply emotive electronic lullabies.

Suzy's flat was empty on that Wednesday morning, maybe for one hour. Then I saw her light switch on. She's 85 years-old. The only interactions we've had involve her telling me that if I ever need anything, "just ask." I've always been fascinated by empty phrases like that one. And I'm certain that she wasn't willing to give me anything that I actually wanted.

I had had the line in my head "you don't have to be precise / my world is just a prototype" for a few months already and we hadn't been able to make a chorus that made me feel anything. Somehow throwing this random woman into my blueprint started to make so much sense, and in that world, I imagined all of the things I could request of her without limitation. In the simulation running in my mind, nearly every choice I make leads to my death. It's happened so many times that I often forget where I was the last time I died.

All Suzy does is stare out her window all day, which is why it's an event when she leaves for even an hour or so at a time. From her window, I'm sure she's seen me die hundreds of times. The least she can do is tell me where to find my body." (R. Missing, 2020)

R. Missing - Suzywhereabout

Informed by a highly influential early 1980s electronic music classic, the title track literally mind-sets the theme of Llewellyn’s latest release, kicking off with a euphoric vibe and drums shimmering with digital artifacts. At times almost dreamy cinematic pads, upfront with energetic Moroderesque propelling bass lines, are the sound signatures of Llewellyn’s journey through a warm and synthesizer laden EP, reviving the sound aesthetics of both the post-discoid VHS and today’s club era with a contemporary touch. Finishing off with a laid-back facet, this four-track EP contains enough warmth and drive to get you safely through the cold months, into a warm and promising future.

Llewellyn is one of Martin Enke’s producer’s monikers, who is closely associated with the Riotvan crew and also known as Lake People. Past releases can be found on labels like Riotvan, Uncanny Valley, Permanent Vacation, Mule Musiq, and others.
