The song is inspired by Rod Stewart, who visited the Rio Carnival with Elton John and Freddie Mercury in summer 1978, where Brazilian artist Jorge Ben’s huge hit Taj Mahal was playing everywhere. When he came back to the UK, Rod plundered Jorge's melody for Do Ya Think I'm Sexy? He was later faced with a court case and forced to donate all proceeds to UNICEF. On the same song, Rod also nabbed the riff from a Bobby Womack song!

Our new single is a chilled tropical cover of our favourite Christmas song - a "snowy samba” which feels apt for a band made up of English and Brazilian members! Sugarcane is the brainchild of Robin French, who played Jools Holland and toured with Amy Winehouse with his former band Mr Hudson & The Library. Robin’s now probably best known as a playwright and screenwriter – creating and writing five series of the BBC sitcom ‘Cuckoo’ and having plays produced by the RSC, The National and The Royal Court.  
 
Sugarcane assembles a diverse coterie of collaborators to create a seductive blend of blissed-out Brazilian rhythm, alongside the sardonic, barbed humour of classic British indie songwriting.

Midland Girls (Remaster)

Sugarcane fuses British indie songwriting with the Brazilian rhythms that have fascinated main man Robin French since his early teens in Birmingham, UK. Robin is the former bassist of Mr. Hudson and the Library, who played Jools Holland and supported Amy Winehouse, The Police and Kanye West. 

BAFTA award-winning actor Antonia Thomas (Misfits, Lovesick, The Good Doctor, Small Axe) is a regular guest contributor on vocal duties. 

After leaving the Library, Robin got his bass stolen while travelling in South America, but came back bewitched by bossa nova guitar playing. Songs came to him that combined bookish indie sensibilities, blissed-out samba grooves and his own Caribbean heritage. 

Back in London, he found himself at a rooftop party with two Brazilian exiles from Bolsanaro - drummer Xande Oliveira (Alison Moyet, Max de Castro) and double bassist Klaus Stahr (Captain Ska, Trio Dona Zefa). Steel pan player and professional dancer Claire Niestyo-Bame completes the line-up. 

Debut album Cat’s Eyes released on July 9th features the singles that have put the band on the map of important tastemakers including The Line of Best Fit, 6Music and Louder Than War.
