There was a time not so long ago when I could only dream that this was possible. Now I have a solo album to my name. How bizarre.

This Too Shall Pass marks Sugargob's first solo release in nearly 5 years - time he has spent living, feeling, creating & crying.
This Too Shall Pass is born from the grief of loss & the pain of heartache, marking a change in direction; a more sincere form of songwriting is the result.
It is the first single of a slew of SEVEN to be released between now & September, in anticipation of his SOLO DEBUT - '...With a Cherry on Top' in October.

...A Different Kind of You

This song is a reworking of an older number from the Sugargob back-catalogue. I'm talking 2016 era. 
As such it is suffused with the kind of cynicism & naïveté towards the oppressive capitalistic system we exist within that only a 22-year-old as I was then can provide. 
Regardless, the track is a homage to the likes of DEVO & New Wave influences of my younger days & a scathing critique of this oft-ridiculous & relentless machine we have to abide by which would see us living out our best days in a office cubicle somewhere, hurriedly scarfing away some horrible sandwich as we respond to emails, pretend to look busy & channel our resentment towards it all into some sort of pre-cancerous cells which, given a few decades, will eventually burst forth & consume us. 
I think not. 
So allow "Don't Look Back" to be your synth-rock outlet for any such feelings as we strive to find our way in this world while keeping our soul as intact as possible. I know it's possible.

Golly, what a throwback.
This is definitely one of the older songs on the album. Perhaps even the progenitor of the notion of a Sugargob album, come to think of it.
Again, this is one of those songs that was written quite quickly in a more innocent, naive time; A quaint little love song along the lines of "I don't care what we do, as long as I'm with you".
Naw.
This track also hearkens back to the era when I first attempted to stretch Sugargob beyond a solo project. So, this recording features the Sugargob band version 1.0 with Phoebe on drums, Jakobi on synths & Erik on bass clarinet.
Being very much in my control freak era at the time, I also layered some synths in myself & shamelessly kicked Phoebe off the drum kit for a big dumb bombastic finish in the final chorus. 
Recorded at TAFE back in 2017, I'm almost ashamed at how long it's taken to put this track out. I always held onto it for 'The Album' which, after a period of years, we now find ourselves on the doorstep of. Yowza.

SINGLE #7 - What Changed?? 🤔

I have mixed feelings about 'releasing' this song. Namely because this is the 3rd time I've done so. However, this song alone is the reason a Sugargob album exists at all so bear with me.

I wrote this song after getting dumped for the first time at age 20. Classic, right? At the time I was listening to a lot of Pet Sounds & the songs were hitting different as I bummed a White Ox no-filter from my mates in the bong shack of my first Newcastle sharehouse & sat in my misery.

Anyways, life went on. I ripped off the chords to one of those Brian Wilson numbers wholesale but added a capo to make it my own & 'What Changed?' was born.

I was deep in the Zappo World at the time but for whatever reason this track never became one of our standards. I kept it for myself & couldn't stop playing it. Little did I know then that this would remain the case for the better part of a decade.

When I eventually began recording for my solo project a year later, it was an obvious choice. Version 1.0 saw me jamming out on the guitar in the Cruelhouse jam room (iykyk) with my recently acquired Digitech Whammy-Wah pedal & VapourDave adding his flair on the iconic pink Zappo Kit.

This was the version that graced my debut EP - 'Potent Yell' (2015). Like its namesake, the song had potential but the feedback I received was people couldn't understand the lyrics. In my fervour I had run the vocals through that same Whammy Wah pedal which as a goofy effect was fun but largely indecipherable.

I knew I had to do the song justice. So when I'd had enough of being a stoner layabout & took up studies again at TAFE for Sound Production, a reworking of this song became the obvious choice to make use of that sweet SSL desk in the Tighes Hill studio.
