State of the Nation: Capturing 21st Century Britain in Literature

In the wake of the coronavirus epidemic and shutting down of much of the UK's cultural life, we have decided to bring you a series of interviews with contemporary artists, writers, filmmakers and other cultural figures, conducted via Skype (so apologies for the diminished audio quality), about their practices, the political issues that inspire them and the socio-economic conditions that have shaped their work.

In the nineteenth of these Sessions, Juliet talks to Belgian artist, filmmaker and writer Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven about her recent retrospective in Berlin and its relationship to a work by Situationist theorist Raoul Vaneigem; her contribution to a group exhibition on the early 21st century, responding to Paul Van Ostaijen's epic poem Occupied City (1922); and her ongoing interests in feminism, the female body and technology.

In this month's Resonance 104.4fm show, Juliet talks to academics Owen Holland (University College London) and Bertrand Taithe (University of Manchester) about how writers responded to the Commune of Paris of 1871, both during its two-month existence from March to May 1871, and over the following decades. They talk about the print culture and intellectual circles that existed in Paris and France at the time; how writers such as Gustave Flaubert, Victor Hugo, Arthur Rimbaud, George Sand and Émile Zola reacted to the Commune at the time, and throughout the rest of the 19th century; how British authors responded in the 1880s, and how this shaped the mythology of the Commune; and how this interest in the Commune's memory became less the concern of literary writers and more of political theorists in the early 20th century.

Variations: An interview with Juliet Jacques

In this month's Resonance 104.4fm show, Juliet talks to poetry, editor and academic Golnoosh Nour about the life and work of Iranian poet, writer and filmmaker Forough Farrokhzad (1935-67). Featuring plenty of readings from Farrokhzad's work (in the original Farsi and English translation by Sholeh Wolpé), Juliet and Golnoosh talk about Farrokhzad's early life and emergence on the post-war Iranian poetry scene, how her erotic feminist poetry scandalised the literary establishment, and her interest in traditional Persian literature. They discuss her only film, the short documentary The House is Black (1962) about a leper colony in Tabriz, northwest Iran; her relationship with filmmaker Ebrahim Golestan; and her influence on later Iranian filmmakers. Finally, they talk about Farrokhzad's enduring legacy in Iran despite her work being banned after the Islamic Revolution of 1979, and her influence on Golnoosh's poetry.

Written by Russell T. The Uses and Limits of Criticism

One hundred years after the Russian Revolution, the intellectual and ideological nature of the art and culture produced between October 1917 and the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 remained hotly debated and, at times, poorly understood. Here, Juliet Jacques welcomes writer/critics Maria Chehonadskih, Owen Hatherley (author of Militant Modernism (2009), Landscapes of Communism (2015) and The Chaplin Machine (2016)) and Ilia Rogatchevski to discuss the cultural legacy of the Soviet period and challenge Western preconceptions about the relationship between art and politics in the former USSR, from the Constructivist energy of the 1920s and imposition of Socialist Realism under Stalin, all the way through to the underground art movements of the 1980s.

Prole Art Threat: The Fall, post-punk and popular modernism

One of the more intriguing - and most Lacanian - slogans that appeared in Paris in May 1968 declared 'Il est interdit d'interdire' - 'It is forbidden to forbid'. In this follow-up to our recent Resonance 104.4fm show about the insurrections, Juliet Jacques talks to curator/writer Paul Clinton about his 'Forbidden to Forbid' exhibition, how May '68 launched a decade of queer radicalism, the tensions within its gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender elements, and its eventual collapse amidst the HIV/AIDS crisis and the decline of the wider French left.

'De-Communisation' has become a central plank of government policy since 'Euromaidan' - the second revolution in Ukraine after independence from the USSR in 1991. Determination to erase not just the Soviet past but any possibility of left-wing radicalism is the one thing that unites the country's two largest political forces: one that represents European Union-facing neoliberalism, the other, violent Ukrainian nationalism. Israeli filmmaker Avi Mograbi (b. 1956) has been documenting the Israel/Palestine conflict, and other issues in Israeli politics, since 1989. He has since made eight award-winning feature films and a number of shorts that forensically examine his home country's character and behaviour, and experiment with the documentary form. Avi Mograbi: Making films in the Middle East

Leonora Carrington (1917-2011) was one of the last surviving members of the Surrealist movement, and one of the most singular figures in English modernism. A writer, painter and sculptor, who moved from an English country house to Mexico City, via Paris and New York, Carrington’s life spanned incredible political changes and numerous cultural movements, yet her interests and style remained consistent across the different fields in which she worked.

This week, Juliet talks to Mexican novelist and critic Chloe Aridjis about her personal and creative relationship with Carrington, as well as Carrington’s life and work, and its influence on Josh Appignanesi’s new film Female Human Animal, in which Chloe and Juliet both appear.

Against Creativity: An interview with Oli Mould

Since becoming independent from the collapsing Soviet Union in 1991, Kyrgyzstan has attracted some attention in the West for its two revolutions (in 2005 and 2010) and the 'gay propaganda' bill introduced to its parliament in 2014, but never passed. Sometimes referred to by European liberals as 'the Switzerland of Central Asia' for its relatively democratic constitution, Kyrgzystan has a complicated relationship with its Soviet past, a fascinating artistic history and a vibrant queer and feminist culture fighting hard against virulent homophobia and misogyny.

In this episode of Suite (212) Extra, Juliet Jacques - who has twice visited Kyrgyzstan's capital, Bishkek, and written extensively about the country's LGBTQI politics - talks to Communist and LGBTQI artist-activists Georgy Mamedov and Mohira Suyarkulova. EXTRA: Against Simple Answers: Art, sexuality and society in Kyrgyzstan

John Calder (1927-2018) was a giant of 20th century literary publishing, and a champion of free speech. Best known for publishing Samuel Beckett's novels and poetry, he brought much of the most innovative European literature of the 20th century to an English-speaking audience, ultimately won a landmark obscenity trial over Hubert Selby Jr's 'Last Exit to Brooklyn' and has inspired several generations of exciting writers and publishers.

Joining Juliet to discuss Calder's life and legacy is Alex Kovacs, author of 'The Currency of Paper' (2013), who worked in Calder's bookshop in London in 2008-10.

John Calder - A Life in Publishing

Despite decades of censorship and neglect, Peter Watkins (http://pwatkins.mnsi.net/) has created a body of work that marks him out as one of the UK’s greatest filmmakers. Born in Surrey in 1935, Watkins began his career pioneering the ‘docu-drama’ in two works for the BBC: historical drama Culloden (1964) about the final battle in the Jacobite rebellion, and The War Game (1965), speculating about a nuclear attack on the UK. The BBC refused to broadcast the latter, and after his feature film Privilege (1968) had a poor commercial and critical reception, Watkins spent the rest of his career in exile.

In his theoretical writing, teaching and filmmaking, Watkins has challenged the ‘monoform’ – a standardisation of Mass Audio-Visual Media that barrages its audience with a rapid flow of changing images and sounds, with the intention of preventing any real contemplation. Joining Juliet to discuss Watkins' work is Gareth Evans, former editor of Vertigo magazine and adjunct Moving Image Curator at Whitechapel Gallery.

Pier Paolo Pasolini: Renaissance Man

Brian Eno's huge back catalogue of work as a solo musician, band member and producer goes back decades, including high-profile work with Roxy Music, Talking Heads, David Bowie, John Cale and many others. He is often credited with inventing ambient music, but this conversation between Juliet and Brian does not talk about the past. This week, Lara Alonso Corona talks to Culture.PL editor and Stories from the Eastern West podcast presenter Adam Żuławski about his grandfather Jerzy Żuławski’s science fiction series The Lunar Trilogy and On the Silver Globe, the film adaptation directed by another family member, Andrzej Żuławski and first shown in 1988, and showing in London as part of Kinoteka – the London Polish Film Festival. The Suite (212) Sessions, no. 2 - Erica Scourti

In February 2020, 74 universities affiliated to the UCU (University and College Union) began 14 days of industrial action, launching ‘Four Fights’ over casualisation of labour, unsafe workloads, falling pay, and gender and ethnicity pay gaps. The strikes became national news, supported by staff and students alike, with vibrant picket lines at many “art schools” across the country speaking out against exorbitant tuition fees, massive pay gaps between vice chancellors and lecturers, the punitive and racist Prevent programme introduced to stop student ‘radicalisation’, the digitalisation of courses and much more.

Juliet Jacques – herself a visiting lecturer at the Royal College of Art, where 90% of staff are casualised – spoke to artist and researcher Dr Annie Goh, a lecturer in Fine Art at Central Saint Martins and an Associate Lecturer in Sound Arts at London College of Communication, and Kyran Joughin, lecturer in film and critical practice at Wimbledon College of Art (part of the University of the Arts London) about the recent strikes, how the coronavirus crisis might lead to further digitalisation and casualisation, and how staff and students might organise against it. They also discussed the legacy of Thatcher’s assault on the idea of cultural democracy, the marketisation of education and privatisation of knowledge under the New Labour government, and the student protests after the Liberal Democrats broke their promise to abolish tuition fees on joining the Conservative-led coalition in 2010.

The Covid-19 crisis has caused unprecedented challenges for the art world. The lockdown has blown a hole in the finances of large metropolitan institutions and smaller provincial galleries alike, with knock-on effects for staff and artists. It is causing arts organisations to rethink their relationships with local communities and with the internet, and to consider how exhibitions and other functions might work in the age of social distancing, with a likely fall in visitors and revenue when they eventually decide to reopen.

Joining Juliet to discuss this are Stefan Kalmár, Director of the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London, and Helen Stalker, CEO and Director of the Turnpike Gallery in Leigh, Lancashire. They talked about the origins of the two institutions in the age of cultural democracy, and how they navigated the challenges of austerity and Brexit; their funding models, and expectations of what might change in the wake of the 2019 General Election; how they handled lockdown, including when and why they closed, how they managed their staff and artists, and how much support they’ve received from the Arts Council and elsewhere; when they might reopen, how they might deal with social distancing, how this might change their practice, and whether any crisis-induced changes might be for the good.

The Covid-19 Crisis and the Art Institutions

In the seventeenth of these Sessions, Juliet talks to London-based visual artist and teacher Oreet Ashery. Born in Jerusalem in 1966 and educated at Sheffield Hallam University and Central Saint Martins, Oreet Ashery is a transdisciplinary artist who engages with biopolitical fiction, autoethnography, gender materiality and potential communities, making large-scale projects that span moving image, performance, music, writing and activism. Here, Ashery discusses her new text ‘We’ve been preparing for this our whole lives’ in respond to the Covid-19 outbreak; her recent film Dying Under Your Eyes (2019), commissioned by the Wellcome Collection for the Misbehaving Bodies exhibition that combined Ashery’s work with that of British artist Jo Spence (1934-1992); her Jarman Award-winning series Revisiting Genesis (2015-16) and its themes around death, dying and the digital; her Party for Freedom (2013), made in response to the rise of Dutch far-right politician Geert Wilders, and The World is Flooding (2014), based on a play by Vladimir Mayakovsky; and the implications of the widespread adoption of digital technology during lockdown for the art world and especially the art school.

During Jeremy Corbyn’s time as Labour leader, much attention was part to the economic vision that the party developed for the United Kingdom, but less to his personal interest in the arts, and how that shaped both Labour’s cultural policy, and their programme as a whole. The Arts for All: An interview with Jeremy Corbyn

Often called “Europe’s last dictator”, Aleksandr Lukashenko has been President of Belarus since 1994, frequently holding dubious elections and referenda to give his regime the veneer of democracy. Protests after the most recent contest in August, in which writers and artists were prominent, brought international attention back to Lukashenko’s governance, but the Belarus Free Theatre have been making work at home and abroad about oppression and censorship in the country for the last fifteen years. This month on Resonance 104.4fm, Juliet spoke to the Theatre’s co-founder Natalia Kaliada, in exile in London, and Svetlana Sugako, the Theatre’s co-manager in Minsk, about their work, the regime and the recent protests.

Power and Protest: An interview with the Belarus Free Theatre

Established in 1965, the Greater London Council hosted one of the United Kingdom’s most radical experiments in cultural policy after Ken Livingstone and the Labour left took control of it in 1981. This month, Juliet talks to academic Hazel Atashroo and Red Metropolis author Owen Hatherley about the entrance of the “post-1968 generation” into the GLC, and their approach to the arts: their interest in cultural democracy and challenging the Arts Council’s model of centralised funding; the Ethnic Arts and Community Arts sub-committees, and their critics; their use of post-punk aesthetics and their hip hop festival; their engagement with the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and other radical movements. They discuss the reasons for the GLC’s abolition in 1986, the media campaign against “the Loony Left” and Thatcher’s assault on local authorities; its influence on New Labour’s cultural policies and foundation of the Greater London Assembly in 2000; and what can be learned from the GLC’s approach to the arts in the 21st century.

Documentary Film and the Holocaust

In this month's Resonance 104.4fm show, made available a day early for our Patreon subscribers, Juliet talks to Dr Samba Gadjigo, author of a biography on the subject and co-director of the feature-length documentary Sembène! (2015), about the life and work of Senegalese writer and filmmaker Ousmane Sembène (1923-2007). They talk about the place of Senegal within the French empire, Sembène's upbringing in French West Africa and his political and literary awakening in post-war Marseille, his film training in the USSR and cinematic work in post-independence Senegal, his relationship with President (and poet/cultural theorist) Léopold S.
