New, interactive project offers a look at a rare piece of African-diasporic sheet music.

The song “Angola” stages a lively conversation between the upper and lower registers in a call-and-response pattern. It is the only one of these tunes with lyrics that clearly align with the notes. The pattern recalls a drumming style, but may have been performed on a low pitched stringed instrument, or on a balafon, which is a type of xylophone that has wooden keys with gourd resonators. Balafons were common in parts of West Africa and in many sites within the African diaspora.

"Papa” is just 4 bars long, but it begs to be repeated. When played this way, it has a more circular quality than the straight, square line you see on the page. Whereas notated Western art music generally has a distinctive beginning and end, in many vernacular traditions simple melodies are repeated and improvised ad infinitum in open-ended communal performances. This piece fits nicely on the banjo, but it also sounds lovely played on an mbira.

Although “Koromanti” is printed as a single piece, there are actually three very distinctive sections within the longer work. For this reason, we have chosen to treat each of these sections as single pieces. Koromanti was a term commonly used to describe enslaved people from the Akan ethnic group from West Africa, one of the largest group among the enslaved in Jamaica at the time.

New, interactive project offers a look at a rare piece of African-diasporic sheet music.

This piece is notable for its very rapid scales, which would require a virtuosic performer and a nimble instrument. It draws on a natural minor scale and is divided into two parts. There is an unusual shift in the way the rhythm is notated, possibly because the transcriber wanted to show how the groove shifted into a B section.

This is the longest of all the tunes, with fully 26 measures of music. It is a wandering and unpredictable piece, and the structure is hard to parse as well. Each bar has, in a sense, its own sound and unit. This song is ultimately the most open-ended of the group, inviting different interpretations and perhaps incorporation into new musical pieces yet to be born.

Sule's solo career may be shiny and brand new by industry standards, but calling him an emerging artist falls far short of telling the whole story. Having completed many tours of duty as a musical mercenary for acts such as Lionel Richie, Sky and Corneille, opened for legends like Celine Dion, Kool and the Gang, Sean Paul and Akon, and reached the quarter finals on "La Voix" (Quebec Canada's instalment of "The Voice") Sule is now ready to lock and load under his own banner.

Weened on the classic Rock and Folk Rock of the 70s and 80s, acts like Led Zeppelin, Neil Young, The Police and Jimi Hendrix had a preliminary influence. A healthy diet of everything from Marvin Gaye and Prince to Miles Davis, Louis Jordan, B.B. King, and George Benson helped to round things out. For Sule breaking musical boundaries is only natural. This Cross pollination can be heard on his studio albums "The Fall", "Alive" and "Hold On".

Sule's live act is a dynamic sonic experience with a full range of emotions. He adeptly goes from goose bump inducing ballads to head bopping renditions to high octane, full out rockin', and combines these to suit any audience. The show, though mostly original, is peppered with remakes from some of Sule's favourite artists.

Describing Sule (Soo-Lay) on paper doesn't do him justice. To truly experience his music and artistry, listen to his albums or catch the act live. Whether live of recorded, this is where all the colours of his work come out in full spectrum.

En 2015, il se faisait connaitre du grand public alors qu'il atteignait les quarts de finales de la populaire émission La Voix diffusée sur les ondes de TVA. Fort de toutes ces expériences, Sule est maintenant prêt à conquérir le public avec ses propres chansons.

Nourri au son du Classic Rock et du Folk Rock des années 70 & 80, Led Zeppelin, Neil Young, The Police et Jimi Hendrix furent ses premières influences. Au fil des ans, d'autres grands se sont ajoutés à liste : Marvin Gaye, Prince, Miles Davis, Louis Jordan, B.B. King, et George Benson, chacun d'eux a contribué à nourrir l'univers musical de ce talentueux chanteur et guitariste.

Sur scène, Sule propose une expérience sonore et dynamique pleine d'émotions. Il est sait de donner la chair de poule en entonnant une ballade pleine de nostalgie, puis balancer ensuite un rock vitaminé qui fera danser les plus coincés. En plus de jouer ses propres compositions, Sule sait aussi reprendre à sa manière certains succès de ses artistes préférés.
