A great philosopher (Samuel Johnson, not Ebeneezer Goode) once wrote… “our brightest blazes of gladness are commonly kindled by unexpected sparks”. While it would be a stretch to suggest the Drumcode artist roster are closet philosophy fans, once one begins to unravel the tale that led to Jel Ford remixing the 2012 Alan Fitzpatrick hit ‘For An Endless Night’ and it is impossible to escape the unexpected enterprise and spirit of surprise that are at the heart of this exciting collaboration. 

As fans of Adam Beyer’s label will testify, the two Drumcode names have more in common than just a label stable, they also share common ground with the peak-time melodic sound that has delivered many of the labels most memorable output. Ford being a much more recent addition than Fitzpatrick, whose history with the seminal Swedish imprint stretches back to 2009, however Ford’s history within techno goes back even further having released multiple EP’s through the early noughties on vintage UK techno labels including Dave Angel’s Rotation Records, Billy Nasty’s Tortured Records, Primate Recordings and Ford’s own Jericho imprint. 

It is within this shared passion for uplifting synths and big room melodies that the ‘unexpected spark’ of creativity that led to Ford remixing Fitzpatrick can be found. An long-time admirer of Fitzpatrick’s work, Ford had developed an idea for his alternative version and secretly worked on the remix long before any discussion of the project had taken place. Once given the draft version, Fitzpatrick immediately endorsed the remix, excited to have an updated version to breath new life into what had become a familiar staple of his sets for the past two years. Parts were swapped and the end result being the barnstorming end-of-night monster presented here. A track that will be familiar with many having been the subject of much social-media furor since it first surfaced back in Autumn 2014.

The internationally renowned producer Alex Kenji boards the Great Stuff ship together with partner in crime Luca Guerrieri. In their luggage they have two massive tracks waiting to get played on a dancefloor near you. On the Amaro split EP resides their collaboration tune “Amaro”, that comes in the form of a muscular, moody and dark piano driven composition. It’s long breaks and dry drum programming give it quite a rough edge - perfectly suited for late night sets.

Track two ‘Layover’ was handcrafted by Alex Kenji and features a cutting edge tech-house feel. It nicely balances energy and vibe, while keeping things building and moving forward. Lush samples float alongside rumbling sounds and dazzling pads.

Summer (Brendon Collins) & Swyft swoop down from the looming cliffs and drop another gleaming gem into the gardens titled Nightstead / Mirage. The flowerbomb thuds against the soil and ignites the blue and green tulips growing peacefully nearby. Sparks burst in fiery fits of reds, oranges, and yellows just as dusk overtakes the landscape. These balls of brilliant light call forth the alluring sounds of hypnotica often found in the Tulipa realm. The animals react by encircling the gardens and performing a dance for lovers of deeply underground electronic music.

Strapped in voracity. The whistling agent. Passing through the softest times. A capsizing sprinkler. The undulating chords swam laps around my heart. Wilting ideas of being in a mire. The girl versus twenty harmonicas, a liter of juice, and a crisp blanket. Treated silhouette. From brotherly love to sisterly adventure. The shocking tale cloaked town sanctuaries. A melon-colored serpent fell victim to fantasy. Yeasty soup. Prancing through the fried shrubbery. Synthesized obstruction cast a shadow on the lawn. Dew dripping on a sorrowful field. Volunteer and breathe.

Yet another bright new star on the techno horizon is Holland’s Rob Hes, who joins up with the up-and-coming LAAT to raise the techno temperature on CD3 to new heights with their intense ‘Perseverance’.

October 2017 brings the next big release from Christian Smith, with his album project “Synergy”. Compiled of 14 original tracks, the album is a selection of collaboration tracks he has produced on the road and at home in his own studio over the last 10 months with some legendary names as well as up and coming talents alike.

Tronic are drip feeding fans two releases, in August and September, before the full release on the 9th October. First up is “Neon Jungle” a debut collaboration for Christian with house legend Harry Romero, which was produced in Harry’s studio on a trip to New York. 

“Neon Jungle” kicks off with an enticing groove, locking you into the track layer by layer, as hats build along a bubbling synth line. Snare hits tease the listener as the synth modulates into a short but very sweet breakdown, sending dance floors into a euphoric frenzy.

“Jungle Life” has some old school electro elements all over it. An acid inspired bass line booms like sub bass should. The funk inspired rhythm builds organically over an echoing, atmospheric vocal stab, which draws you into the depths of this awesome track.

The whole EP oozes with serious jungle funk, offering two tracks that work together so perfectly in this debut collaboration for Christian and Harry. Get your dancing shoes on, this one is going to get you swinging!
