Francisco Goya was a Spanish romantic painter and printmaker and is widely considered the most important Spanish painter of the late 18th century. Towards his later years, Goya became deaf, paranoid, and depressed. He moved into a farmhouse that he converted into a studio called “La Quinta del Sordo” (The House of the Deaf Man). At the age of 75 he painted 14 paintings onto the walls of the farmhouse known as “the black paintings” that he would never write, exhibit, or talk about. It was only after his death that these would be transferred to canvas and exhibited. 

Goya’s most famous of the black paintings was ‘Saturn Devouring His Son’ (the base of the album artwork for ASWIS). It is said that Goya painted this because just like Saturn, he believed one of his sons would overthrow him and his legacy... 


Saturn (Saturnus) is the Roman Titan/God of creation, time, dissolution, wealth, agriculture, periodic renewal, and liberation. He was the father of all other gods and beings to come. Saturn grew paranoid by the prophecy he was told that one of his children would overthrow him as ruler of the Titans. In this fear, he began devouring each of his children one by one as they were born. 

Saturn could not avoid his destiny no matter how hard he tried to by devouring his children. Saturn’s wife hid their sixth son, Jupiter, from Saturn and instead left a stone, disguised as a baby wrapped in swaddling in his place. Jupiter escaped and returned later to defeat his father Saturn and fulfill the prophecy. He banished Saturn and the other titans to Tartarus and became the leader of the gods. 


This album is a bridge between our struggles and issues, and how they relate to that of the mythological stories, artistic struggles of Goya, and other parables discussed in the Roman and Greek scriptures that have endless connections with our journeys to this day. A Stone Wrapped in Swaddling is a sonic depiction of how we have both been and destroyed and managed to overcome our own personal Saturns.
