Yes, we're back in 1986. Crude drum loops with precious little in the way of variation or fills; a pounding, rhythmic piano and a track whose influence is clear. As usual with a Sundae Club track, the Mellotron cuts through the mix, but listen out for splashes of minimoog, a squirt of Prodigy and a flourish of Hammond. Our occasional collaborator, Bromley Hayes kindly supplied his late Model D (only 80 from the end of production) and provided invaluable assistance in programming. Only Bromley could create a minimoog tambourine, which drifts in towards the end of the track, at which point you are invited to explore the "Sound of the Moog"!

Tara's vocal is processed through an EMS Synthi-A spring reverb and filter.

Co-dedicated to Bob Moog and Steve Jobs. Two very different visionaries without whom our music would have been either impossible or very different.

the 1967 'Our World' broadcast, the first live international
TV programme bounced around the world by satellite.
Using only sounds from the Oramics Machine samples
we've tried to give voices to those satellites, calling to
each other across the vast void of space, and to us back
on Earth, on Our World.

"...The results are in and after adding up the scores it turned out we had a ‘photo finish’ on our hands. Unfortunately you didn’t win, but we would like to give Satellites Cry a special mention, because it still had an impressive overall score and everybody really liked the idea of two “satellites crying to each other across the void of space,” to put it in the words of our judge at the Wire. 

Brian Eno said:”Has a strong mood, and the sort of mysteriousness that Daphne liked.” 

DJ Spooky thought it was a “beautiful ambient piece.”

Satellites Cry (Afterwards Oramics Mix)

Remixes can, by definition be a little bit rude. You take a track, remove much of someone else's hard work and change it to how you think it probably should have sounded. When the lovely people from Bury St.Edmunds' finest band, The Soft invited us to remix one of their tracks we were especially mindful of this. 

We had just taken delivery of a few new (well, old) bits of equipment including a Korg drum machine from the 1960s and a minimoog, which together with a few of our other bits of gear that we had to hand at the time, a Korg MicroPreset, Mellotron, Black Beauty side drum and Fender bass instantly reminded us of the sound of one of our favourite bands from the past. The soulful, gentle vocal of The Soft's original track "Half Breath" could fit beautifully into something that we'd long wanted to create, so here it is, another one of our now famous 'Spot the Influence' tracks. We've left Bury behind, and driven the Sundae Club Commer Ice-Cream van up the A1(M) and M6 to the North-West, and back in time to around 1983. The soulfulness has been traded for a little bit of lightness - something that the band who have influenced us often managed, probably without really wanting to...
