MM CAST 04: Franz Scala

From his studio at the (infamous) berliner club "Sameheads" , Franz Scala has been building with years a great reputation on the contemporary "Italo-Dance-scene", being the mind behind 2 essential labels as "Slow Motion" and "Wrong Era". Artists like "Fabrizio Mammarella", "Francisco" or "Rodion", to name a few, have been rising as a part of the Italian family that Scala has created with "Slow Motion".

Imprints as "Bordello A Parigi", "Tusk Wax", "Bahnsteig 23" or "MM Discos" have had the pleasure of hosting the Italian maestro, signing there remarkable records. Italian dance highly influenced by new wave, obscure synths and a little balearic touch.

We are very happy to have Franz for the 4th episode of our monthly "MM Casts", doing what he knows best, and inviting us to a space oddity thru wave, synth pop and of course...italo disco baby ;)

As a DJ he easily switches between a melodramatic kind of indie house and techno, with a pinch of italo & disco ultimately. It’s hard to pin down, but he likes to call it ‘Electropical soytrance from Amsterdam’. Berlin based DJ Philipp Schultheis @philippschultheis likes to eat and is an enthusiastic selector, collector and dancer. We met him in Panorama Bar in the Italorama by our friends Slow Motion and he always supported italo Moderni, it's time to let him play some tunes in Italo Moderni series, really talented Dj and great person! Darle amor a Phillipp Schultheis!
Bio:
Former Frankfurt resident Philipp Schultheis has become a Berlin regular with lightning speed by playing well-chosen house and disco tracks. Prerequisited at Marlon Hoffstadt's phone-free Savour The Moment series, he is already notorious for endless closing sets. Even if he's not into producing (yet), there is much output to get familiar with his sound. Ransom Note called him a disc jockey on the rise who has moulded a collection of tracks in a precise and intricate manner with imaginative twists and turns, while his mix for Crack Magazine is blending glittering technicolour cuts into a buoyant excursion primed for the dance. ZeeZout describes his sound as deep space astrofunk and synthesizer induced orgasms courtesy, weaved together into an exuberant mix jam-packed with synths, vocoders, and 808’s. For Bordello A Parigi as well as Sinchi Collective, he contributed two each carefully selected, four-hour Italo Only sets, containing guilty pleasures and hidden treasures as well as contemporary Italo biggies.

Welcome one of the most expressive Polish producers of electronic music.

Originally from Koszalin, Marcin Łukaszewicz started his adventure with music in primary school. The first live performances appeared in the mid 90s. At the beginning, they were sets played from cassette tapes, and then from vinyl records. As Das Komplex, Łukaszewicz made a debut in 2007.

The first release of Das Komplex was the EP Nowadays, which was released in 2015 by by Father & Son Records & Tapes.
Years passed and Łukasiewicz did not intend to change his approach to creation. He regularly recorded and presented new productions.

Late 2021, he appeared on the Pikes Hotel compilation by DJ Harvery.
His next offering will be an EP released on Prins Thomas Internasjonal label.

Sunday Mix 083 LES YEUX ORANGE

I was first turned on to Goa music in the early 90s, young and innocent, discovering the communal state of trance for the first time. Back then I wasn’t interested in its roots or it’s origins and preferred to get lost in music not thinking of the days to come or those gone by.
When it all became formulaic and a genre as such, things started to lose their magic and I begun to explore sounds of the past, turning my nose up at something which for me had lived it’s course…
I dived into a whole new sonic horizon, old relics which sounded new to me and more interesting than a lot of contemporary releases. Unconsciously, I was drawing a map which covered many seminal dancefloors worldwide. I would later find out that the distance between most of these tracks had no boundaries as they could just as well have been played in Chicago, Manchester, Gent, Ibiza, Baia Degli Angeli, or Goa…
This mix can be listened to like a GPS directing you towards those places, somewhere in the mid 80s, with Goa as the meeting point and final destination. Funnily enough it is also very close to the first mixes that helped put my name on the map almost 20 years ago…
