Techno experimentalist and avant-pop raconteur Reckonwrong aka Alex Peringer returns with a distillation of his musical sound and methods on the fittingly titled Personal Growth.

The four-track EP, composed during a time of uncertainty for Peringer in regards to both his life and relationship with music making, channels warped samples, the “strict rhythmic processes” of computer music, and the artist’s fondness for earworm hooks into four mutant audities that simultaneously recall Foodman, Adrian Sherwood, and the magickal psychedelia of Coil. Space is key (Peringer describes his approach to production as “sound system-mindful”) within which a world of tiny details emerge: a trumpet’s warble, the breath of a vocal. These soft flourishes evoke the intimacy of his previous release, Whities 018, while the work as a whole steps into clubbier territory — a suite of delightfully acid-sour grooves.

Personal Growth is built on fizzing juxtapositions. The brittle percussion of opener Lost Time is set against a throbbing, slowly rising sub-bass. Next, the delicious broken beat swerve of Personal Growth whose new wave guitars (a hint of Vini Reilly) snap into focus on each punchy drop. For the final two tracks, No End In Sight and K&A Connect, Peringer pushes his ROMpler, the Roland JV-2080, to the foreground for what he calls that “better-than-real energy.” Sampled instruments give way to synthetic counterparts such as a strummed harp, the producer immersing us fully and confidently within his richly orchestrated, uniquely ersatz sound world.
