It is Monday the 22nd of December 2014 and we have new guests for the very first time on the CLR Podcast. The Kiev-based duo Woo York has come a long way from being Ukraine capital’s local heroes to becoming an internationally recognized live act with their own signature sound. They are not only residents of legendary Glaswegian label Soma Records and head honchos of Planet Rhythm, they have also been delivering one dance floor killer after another since the start of their career back in 2009. Known for their energetic live acts, Woo York combine experimental, dance floor oriented and avant-garde elements into a highly improvisational musical flow with a strong hardware background. The entire music in this set is performed and improvised live during one of their recent gigs and contains two tracks from their upcoming debut 5 tracker EP on Life & Death called The Valley of Songs.

For the first single from a 6-track EP from Montreal's Clarian (who is also one half of Footprintz), the Canadian reached well beyond the border to collaborate with Tel Aviv-born, Madrid-based producer Guy Gerber on "Claire." Gerber has been a major player on Israel's electronic scene since 2006, running his own Supplemental Facts label and infusing traces of minimal techno, tech house, downtempo and deep house in his productions, while remaining singular in his approach. Clarian's vocal contributions were at the heart of Gerber's progressive house-leaning Fabric mix from last year, which joined the likes of Ricardo Villalobos and Omar-S of artists that turned in single-artist mixes to the series. "Claire" starts amid a queasy vocal snippet (with Clarian's French whisper lodged in at the midpoint) and threatens to go darker and deeper. But a steady handclap and glimmering melodic line uplifts and casts light across this seven-minute track.

FELIX DA HOUSECAT RETURNS WITH FIRST ORIGINAL MATERIAL IN ALMOST 4 YEARS - NEW ALBUM COMING THIS YEAR

The wait is finally over. After many months plotting away in dark studios and road-testing his freakish creations in smoky clubs and epic festivals across the world, Felix Da Housecat returns with a truly monstrous EP. Since his masterful 2011 opus ‘Son Of Analogue’, he’s been lurking in the shadows, pushing his distinctive sound in new directions and patiently waiting for the moment to strike back and remind us why we fell in love with his unique shtick in the first place. That moment is now.
One of dance music’s true characters and pioneers, he has consistently delivered throughout his career, whatever musical incarnation he’s been inhabiting. From the thumping techno sounds of his ‘90s era, to helping create the blueprint for the electro clash explosion of the early 2000s, to dragging Diddy onto the dancefloor via their groundbreaking hip-hop/house collaboration, he has rarely stood still and has created explosive material in each and every project.

2013 is going to be a huge year for the charismatic Felix, with several EPs dropping on Brooklyn, NYC-based label 'No Shame' (in association with Felix's imprint 'Rude Photo'), some big collaborations and remixes, a new album on the way and a BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix on 22nd Feb, which will be streamed live for the world to watch for the first time in its history. The 'Sinner Winner' EP is the first taste of this sizzling new material, serving up two markedly different tracks that are bound by the common goal of making thousands of asses shake in unison.

‘Give Me Body’ is a rampant electro-disco workout, camp as you like and brimming over with effervescent energy. An infectious vocal, trumpet and bass loop works its slinky way around Felix’s sharp, dramatic live percussion and intense filters, coming across somewhere between Daft Punk and Sylvester. "I love my ‘70s / ‘80s disco and haven’t done a track in this vein in ages,” says Felix, “so I figured I would do something hooky and fun! It’s not rocket science... when we dancing in them clubs we all want a lil’ BODY!" Not rocket science, but certainly rocket fuel.

Concept tracks are usually contrived rubbish, but ‘Sinner Winner’ pulls it off in serious style. Felix explains his vision: “Basically in thee night-time fun world, we all find ourselves sinnin', so I had this idea of a preacher from the South in thee deep bible district finding his way into sinner clubland. He grabs the mic and just starts ranting, but then all of a sudden the pastor gets caught up in thee nightlife fun world… and start becoming a hypocrite!”. This delicious yarn is spun through a slow-building crescendo of offbeat claps and niggling synths before a supremely funky and crisp bassline arpeggio slams its way in. Tense organs and warped vocal edits heighten the chaotic atmosphere, making for a unique romp through the deranged mind of this inimitable legend. It’s that description, which made Green Velvet want to jump on board for a very special remix — watch this space!
