SunSquabi

Colorado-based hydro-funk trio Sunsquabi will release their latest full-length album Instinct on January 11th. Led by a three-track series of singles “Caterpiller,” “Chrysalis,” and “Night Moth,” the LP finds the band at their highest peak as they have been dedicated to the metamorphosis of capturing elements in their live performances in the studio as improvisational jams have been fleshed out into full-blown songs and staples in their repertoire.

Instinct is a biological-themed journey of evolution. With the addition of Josh Fairman (bass/synth bass) last year and new levels of compositional prowess and sound design, it is evident that the group is dedicated to forward trajectory and experimentation. Each song’s namesake inspired by a creature or biological element is a reflection of every track taking on a distinct life of its own.

In addition to Kevin Donohue (Guitar/Production), Josh Fairman (Bass/Synth Bass), and Chris Anderson (Drums), the album also features Nick Gerlach on saxophone (“Pangolin”), Spencer Anderson on Violin (“Chrysalis”), Chris Karns (Pretty Lights) on Turntables, Jason Hann(string Cheese Incident) on percussion.

Just A Little

‘Caterpillar’ is the first stage in a 3-part series. The band has been focusing on Biology and evolution as themes for inspiration during their writing process. “The metamorphosis becomes more evident as the other two stages are revealed. It's been a really fun process to work on. Especially because we are bridging the other stages (yet to be released) together.” Says Kevin Donohue. Chris Anderson’s (drummer) younger brother Spencer Anderson is also featured on the violin in the track. ‘Caterpillar’ is the 2nd single released by the band since their last EP with more music to be released in the coming months.

Caterpillar

“Chrysalis” is the second stage of SunSquabi’s three-part series that started with the track “Caterpillar” and will also include the forthcoming “Night Moth.” All three songs find SunSquabi focusing on biology and evolution as themes for inspiration during their writing process and show off a metamorphosis to the way their music has come into fruition recently. “The metamorphosis becomes more evident as these stages are revealed,” multi-instrumentalist Kevin Donohue explains.

Chrysalis

‘Night Moth’ is the final stage and lead track of a 3-part series that started with tracks ‘Caterpillar’ and ‘Chrysalis’. “Night Moth is the peak of the metamorphosis and really represents the transformation we have gone through as a band over the last year. The song began as an improvisational idea in Madison, WI while on tour. Over time the song took form to what the studio version is today, changing shape and structure many times. This idea was really what spawned the rest of the upcoming album.” Says Kevin Donohue.

This is a remix of the Lettuce track "The Love You Left Behind" from the Mt. Crushmore album. 

“Lettuce has always been one of our favorite bands to listen to. The opportunity to work with their stems and remix this song has been so fun and so interesting to see a little bit of their production process. The first half of the remix adds a classical style melody over the main chorus and changes the song to a darker feel. Thus, setting up the second half as a journey through a psychedelic desert of the ghosts of love you left behind. This remix has been in the works since July 2018 and it's a huge relief to finally be releasing this to all of you. About the “Top Down”:
"Top Down" came together over the course of nearly a year of remote sessions. Josh (Fairman) and I created the main riff in the basement of my old house, sort of sussed out a framework of the track, and then sent it to Kyle (Hollingsworth). He took it to another place by adding organ, Rhodes, and layers of synths. After adding his parts, we went back and forth with the arrangement, changing subtle things until it really worked as a song, and that's where Jason (Hann) came in and laid in the percussion tracks. Jason is a monster so, we created a little drum break to feature him there. After this, we recorded Chris (Anderson) on the drum kit and swapped and spliced all the midi drums which is really a signature part of our sound as Sunsquabi is the drum thing (using both real and digital drums). The final piece was Kang with a cool glass of whiskey and some sweet shreddy licks to round out the melodic sections of the song. All in all, collaborating so closely with a band that we all grew up listening to and watching in Boulder, Colorado, was an absolute dream come true and we are so proud of how it turned out.
