Legowelt - Crystal Cult 2080 Album News, EP announcement

Irrepressible Dutchman Legowelt is to release a new album in the coming months. Entitled ‘Crystal Code 2080’, it will come on Creme Organization and is preceded by a sampler EP that features one track from it. That track is ‘Crystal Cult 2080’, a melodically mystic production that is alive with Legowelt’s usual synthesiser magic. 

The other three tracks are just as muddled and multi-layered, texturally rich and typically Legowelt.  They include the eeriness of ‘majestic Alchemy’, the stormy and filmic emotions of ‘Mistral’ and classic house jack of  ‘Do What U Gotta Do’ with its mesmerising synth lines and deep moods.

The ‘2080’ part of the album title is taken from the Roland JV2080, a legendary digital synthesizer from the nineties that was used a lot in the making of the album. Bought second-hand in Tokyo for a couple of hundred dollars, it lends the record a very dewy eyed soul, whilst the ‘Crystal’ part of the title stands for the self-made ‘DIY germanium crystal compressor’ Legowelt used throughout the writing process. 

The album itself features ten new tracks of pure Legowelt music mainly recorded in De Hague in the past year, but also on the road during tours of LA, the Californian desert, Tokyo (which spawned ‘Crystal Cult 2080’) and Tejada Gran Canaria (where ‘The Future of Myself’ was written.) Where his last album The Paranormal Soul was an organic trip into misty forests, this one seems more concerned with medieval spirits; it’s deeper, darker and the whole thing is tied together by a more coherent sense of ancient alchemy. 

Given the use of a DIY germanium crystal compressor during production, it’s no wonder everything feels warm, fuzzy and mystic in a way that draws your attention in like that fabled philosopher’s stone… glare too long and you might just turn to stone. Right from the opening track the mood is so encapsulating you are drawn right into Danny Wolfers’ mysterious electronic world. From there various different tempos are explored and plenty of famed synthesiser work comes to the fore, wrapping grooves in trippy themes, impish spirits and plenty of organic lushness.

Rudeboyz are Massive Q, Andile-T and Menchess from Durban. They make Gqom (or Gqomu or Igqom); raw, dark and hypnotic South African house music rooted in the townships of Durban, and shared with the world via the internet and social media. Gqom blares out at makeshift clubs, taxis and shopping malls; it is the music in Durban. Gqom roughly translated from Zulu to ‘Bang’ or ‘Hit’ - It’s uncompromising and stripped back music geared for the dancefloor. 

This EP has been a long time coming. Internet in Durban is woeful, which explains why a lot of tunes are at lower bit rates and equally why this release has been so long in the making. 

The EP opens with Get Down - the most direct and punishing of the four tracks with a punching synth and unrelenting kicks that do not deviate from their rhythm or their cause. 

Mercedes Song and Mitsubishi Song are odes to legendary presses of the pills that fuel the parties that run through the night. They roll for six unsettling minutes a piece - a long ominous drone underpinning the pounding beats. On Mercedes Song TD Snax adds to the unease as he shouts and yelps in Zulu: “Yaze yangibamba weeh yaze yangibamba” - "This Mercedes has got me so high, this is my Mercedes.” Mitsubishi Song, one of the biggest Gqom tracks of 2013, mirrors this unease switching between cascading toms and jolting, stuttering rhythms, cowbells and bird tweets.

Sambuka Dance is an ode to a very different poison and its disorientating arrangement is reminiscent of its effects. A jarring, angry chant harasses incessantly transforming the track into a full body experience.

As Jumping Back Slash eloquently put “Gqom feels like music you’ve been listening to for years”. It is a ghostly cousin of sounds it touches on - brash, abrasive music with no inhibitions.

The mysterious talents Antenna shows their tough, high impact house sound for their second release on the Dutch Pinkman label. 
First up, Childhood is a mid tempo bit of elastic, groove driven house with whirring machines, raw synth patterns and filtered, muffled vocals. Hi hats add an incendiary element of pressure but really this one is all about the pinging, rubbery drums that flail like drunken limbs. 
When I Read My Book is another purposeful offering riddled with melody and deep drums, slapping claps and lots of jittery cow bells, impish synth sounds and bass kills that brings a real sense of energy to proceedings. Lastly, In August is a tripped out cut with skipping kick drums, celestial and heavenly, glassy melodies and skittish percussion that all glide along in alluring and off kilter fashion. This is house music, but not as you know it!

"No Reason to Lie" is the lead track of the EP, characterized by an aggressive but groovy percussion.

"I Can't Stop Looking at You"- is the most playful track. It has a friendly bass line which stands out. The movement is given by vocals, making the track ideal for every dance floor. 

"Am" - Brian shows his introspective side by this track in which the sounds are composed by long pads that point out the down lift, a powerful bass line alongside a vocal that marks the rhythm of the track.

Popping up for the first time on Figure SPC Y, it was the remarkable synth-work of @UBX127 that instantly struck a chord with the label’s demand for substantial techno. Now the Stockholm artist proves himself loyal and hits back twofold with a pair of EPs that further highlight his mastery of both vivid modulation and effective sequencing.

Leading into this batch of new tunes are the crafty and beautifully fleshed-out synth-arpeggios of opener Han, which UBX127 complements gracefully by adding tender touches of melody. A2 cut Create and Destroy displays a new side to the producer that verges on the manic, building upon a swirling theme that soon flies into a lunatic frenzy. Soothing then are the spacious sounds of Barabrus, a crisp piece of floating breakbeats and shoving sub-bass. Living up to its name, Swells starts as a bold synth-led groove and slowly grows into a romping beast that rebels against glistening sonic whiplashes.

Even in its own right Constant Permutation Part 1 stands as a cohesive and compelling record that will add to any collection. But with its equally strong successor already waiting in the wings, it is UBX127 himself who will make a lasting impression.
