Live From Terrydeaux IV: Downtown Revisited

February 28, 2014 marks four years since my dear friend Terry Maurer passed on to the other side.  In 2011, I felt it appropriate to mark the first anniversary of his new life with a mix: Live From Terrydeaux. 

The tracks that comprise the fourth installment in the continuing annual series, Live From Terrydeaux, are, primarily, 1985 – 1989 Miami Bass and Freestyle tracks – some updated and remixed since that time.  These particular tracks were those I played for years while spinning in the Thibodaux club scene, particularly at Uptown, Goobers and Bullwinkle’s, in downtown during the late 80’s and early 90’s.  After midnight, on any given Thursday or Saturday night, during that time, you would find a beyond capacity crowd on my floors and Terry was always in that number. If you were there, turn it up and remember a time when Miami Bass and Freestyle were emergent, and we brought the house down. If you were not, turn it up anyway … ☺

  February 28, 2015 marks five years since my dear friend Terry Maurer passed on to the other side.  In 2011, I felt it appropriate to mark the first anniversary of his new life with a mix: Live From Terrydeaux, and this mix is yet another installment in the series that began with that 2011 mix. 

The tracks that comprise the fifth installment of Live From Terrydeaux are a blend of old and new tracks - from Miami Bass to Dubstep, and plenty of Breaks and Chill Out in between. As the title of volume “V” states, its time for me to begin “Mixing Forward”. We may yet reminisce upon the past on future volumes, but great EDM exists today, although you wouldn’t know it from listening to mainstream media.  Let this mix be a testament that truly great music still exists, and one who cares for their craft can still assemble great sets – it takes but time and passion.

February 28, 2012 marks two years since my dear friend Terry Maurer passed on to the other side.  At this time last year, I felt it appropriate to mark the first anniversary of his new life with a mix: Live From Terrydeaux.  Looking back, I recorded it to out let my feelings, as I’ve done over the past 25 years, and, although some of the tracks reminded me of T near the end of his physical incarnation, so many great tracks yet exist that can be utilized to tell the story of his life then and, as I‘ve come to recently understand, what he wishes to communicate now … and to whom.
  
The tracks that comprise the second installment in the continuing annual series, Live From Terrydeaux, were selected either by me, or were “downloaded” to me by T.  This process took over a month, as I found it necessary to veto some his selections, and vice versa ☺.  The track list below notates who selected the track and the memory associated therewith, if selected by me (B), or to whom it’s intended, if selected by Terry (T).  

In order to be included, some of the tracks needed to be remixed; a factor requiring me to push the boundaries of my production limitations … limitations Terry always wished me to push beyond.  Future editions of this series will, likely, one day include original Super B musical productions (… waaayyyyy future editions, Terry).  Until then, it is with love and remembrance that I present:

Live From Terrydeaux III: Escapades Revisited

February 28, 2013 marks three years since my dear friend Terry Maurer passed on to the other side.  In 2011, I felt it appropriate to mark the first anniversary of his new life with a mix: Live From Terrydeaux. 

The tracks that comprise the third installment in the continuing annual series, Live From Terrydeaux, are primarily 1997 – 1999 Florida Breaks.  These particular Florida Breaks were the anthems played by Gary Brown (G. Brown) and Trent Cantrell (DJ Indio) at the staple afterhours nightclub in Metairie, LA: Escapades.  After midnight, on any given Saturday night from mid-1997 – 1999, you could find me and Terry, and a dozen others from Thibodaux at the center of the club dancing the night away.  If you were there, this will be one of the baddest continuous mix CD’s you will own, if you were not … you missed out on the gilded age of good times and breakbeat dance music. 

In addition to the Florida Breaks in this set, I have bookended the mix with two new Super B remixes: Gypsy Groove and Paid In My Love, thereby continuing to honor Terry’s love for my talents by pushing the boundaries of my production limitations year after year … limitations Terry always wished me to push beyond.  This year, I decided to begin working within Ableton Live: one of the industry standard DAW’s - a time consuming learning curve worth the time and energy expended.

Live From Terrydeaux III: Escapades Revisited (Continuous Mix, 320 kbps, 2013)

Bryan Barrios, a.k.a. Super B, is an American DJ, who spins Freestyle, Miami Bass, Breaks, Electro, Drum & Bass and Uplifting Trance dance music.

In 1985, at the age of 14, Barrios founded Impulse DJ’s with Jeffrey Borne, and began mixing one year later at the age of 15. His company, Impulse DJ’s, moved to New Orleans, Louisiana that same year, and he was taught the art of beat mixing by Doctor Disco who aired the first radio mix show in Louisiana.

In 1987, at age 16, Impulse DJ’s began hosting three radio mix shows of its own: The Saturday Night Dance Party on WEZB-97.1 FM in New Orleans, Louisiana; The Saturday Night Throw Down on KCIL-107.5 in Houma, Louisiana; and The Saturday Night Throw Down on KBZZ-96.7 in Morgan City, Louisiana.The three mix shows each aired until 1991. After forming a cooperative endeavor with Pyramid Audio in 1988, Impulse DJ's was simultaneously performing 12 venues every Friday and Saturday night, earning Impulse DJ’s the distinction of being the largest mobile entertainment service in the State.

At the age of 17 in 1988, Barrios had his first Nightclub residency at the, then legendary, Iron Horse, where he played, when not booked on weekends through Impulse. 

In 1991, Barrios parted ways with Borne and formed X-Calibur Entertainment with Todd Schexnayder, and took up Nightclub residency at Uptown in his hometown, which over the next year, went on to shut down the surrounding dance clubs, including Iron Horse, End Zone, Colonels Retreat and Outer-Limits. Barrios performed at Uptown (a.k.a. Goobers and later Bullwinkles) every Wednesday – Saturday night from 1991 through 1995, when not booked through X-Calibur.

In 1995, Barrios left music to attend law school through 1998.

In 1998, after having moved to Houston, Texas, Barrios formed Eternal Records, LLC with long time friend Terry Maurer, Jr., where he released two continuous mix progressive trance / breakbeat compilations, Gabriel and Michael of The Angel Series, under the name DJ Temple, in 1998 and 1999, respectively.

Also in 1998, Barrios formed Eternal Productions, LLC with Maurer; a company that produced raves in Louisiana and Texas for two years. The largest of which, Stimulation 101, was held at the University of Houston’s Hofheinz Pavilion on October 31, 1998 where it broke the attendance record for raves in the sate of Texas at 12,000 attendees. At the time of the event, Stimulation 101 was noted by the Houston Press as the event of choice to attend in the Houston area.The Stimulation 101 attendance record was broken later, the following year.

In 2001, after returning to Louisiana from Texas, Barrios took up a Nightclub residency in Houma, Louisiana at Wizards, which closed down after his departure.

In 2003, Barrios, with three other business associates, including Bob Ellis, opened Club Heat in the heart of the French Quarter in New Orleans, Louisiana. However, shortly thereafter in December 2003, Barrios moved to Florida and Club Heat failed due to poor management.

In 2006, Barrios invested in the breakbeat labels Malicious Recordings and Thugway of Tampa, Florida and served as its A&R Executive for its 2006 and 2007 releases.

From 1997 – 2013, Barrios compiled and mixed over 75 continuous mix CD’s, which were either pressed on his label, Eternal Records, or distributed locally to his fan base. Those titles and production years of the mixes are as follows:
