Five years on from its original launch, Super Weird Substance began 2020 with renewal. Before the world went into lockdown, the label commenced the year with the release of a vinyl single featuring three fresh mixes and an original from Bella Technika’s debut LP, hinting at the new sound that was to follow with subsequent digital singles from three new projects; The Emanations, Soulsmoke and Guevarism.

Refreshed by the inclusion of some younger energy, the label has reinvented its balaericpsychedelicdubdisco sound for the next generation of clubbers, including more house, acid, rave and breakbeat elements. Ché Wilson has been key to this new sound, both in his his collaborations with Greg Wilson (The Emanations) and JRay (Soulsmoke) as well as his own solo Guevarism project, helping lay out the label’s new blueprint with these three varied singles – a sign of what’s to come throughout the rest of 2020 and beyond.

2020 Digital Singles

There’s a new Technicolor musical phenomenon emitting from the Morphogenetic Field… Known as The Emanations, this new project will act as a vessel for Greg and Ché Wilson to explore a new cut and paste approach to production. Sending fragments of classic and cult classic dance tracks through their sonic prism to create fresh hybrids.

The past couple of years have been prolific for the pair in the studio, turning their hand to a number of varied official remixes, including Sleight Of Hands’ 10CC cover for Green Gorilla Lounge, The Cuban Brothers cover of Razzy’s Northern Soul classic, Heavenly Records Melbourne-based outfit Confidence Man, Hipnotic’s early ‘80s boogie, Brooklyn collective Underground System on Soul Clap Records, Serbian electronic live act Bella Technika and the Confidence Man-affiliated Jungle Giants – with further mixes delivered and in the pipeline.

The Emanations project has been developing alongside this plethora of remixes, with Greg and Ché utilising stems provided by Tyrell, the Canadian-based multi-instrumentalist also responsible for replaying the parts for Rolling Stones/Massive Attack mash-up ‘Two Sides Of The Sympathy’ and SWS Chemise cover, ‘She Can’t Love You’.

‘Love’ is the first offering from the project, and links back to the beginnings of Super Weird Substance. Like with the label’s debut release, ‘Summer Came My Way’, the song was originally written by Greg Wilson and performed by The Reynolds for Schooled In The Classics.

This time however, it was mixed down at SWS HQ. Blending and fusing Tyrell’s re-recordings, GW and CW fed The Reynolds through a vocoder, inviting deeply emotive flautist Manon McCoy to add a delicate layer of ethereal magic.

The Emanations - Love

Soulsmoke is a project that emerged out of a shared love of underground US disco, melodic Italian house and esoteric Balearic treasures. With Ché Wilson (Guevarism) working alongside Josh Ray (JRay), Soulsmoke flirts with all three styles, bridging the down and dirty grooves of disco with the floating euphoria of house music, all with an eye on the hedonistic, loved-up party beaches across the Europe.

Arriving with a statement of intent, 9-minutes of hard-hitting piano-driven house, Soulsmoke’s ‘Eternal Desire’ pulls no punches in the pursuit of moving a peak-time crowd. Working with younger Liverpool-based musicians, Super Weird Substance is ebbing slowly closer to its goal of a house-band, with Andrew Wileman providing infectious keys and Lady Soul stepping up with a primal take on JRay’s cosmically charged lyrics, backed subtly by Carmel Reynolds.

Having been DJing together for over a year, whilst previously collaborating on a number of DJ edits as the Fire House collective, Ché Wilson and JRay have built up a solid working relationship, with a finessed and varied musical ability paired with a deep and extensive knowledge of music.

Soulsmoke can be seen as the Yin to the Yang of the Cryptide collective, another project formed by duo, which also includes a host of like-minded musicians and producers. The dark and brooding acid/electro/breakbeat sounds of The Cryptide form a balance to the majestic and uplifting disco/house/Balearic sounds of Soulsmoke.

JRay and Ché Wilson have recently begun DJing together as Soulsmoke and are set to take Super Weird Substance’s new sound to venues and festivals around the UK, with further releases later this year.

The third in Super Weird Substance’s 2020 digital releases, Guevarism's ‘Moonlight (Kept Us Up)’ sees the label further broadening its horizons to take in a wider scope of dance styles.

Ché Wilson has been integral to this new direction. Having forged his own path as a musician, he’s more recently found a new outlet for creativity, becoming a DJ/Producer in his own right. Guevarism is his own club-based project.

Setting the tone via a series of remixes in collaboration with his father Greg Wilson, for Confidence Man, Underground System, The Jungle Giants, Bella Technika, Sleight Of Hands and Hipnotic, the duo provided the label’s first digital release of the year, 'Love' with their new project The Emanations. Following with Soulsmoke's 'Eternal Desire', the debut from a new collaboration between Ché Wilson and JRay.

The uplifting ‘Moonlight (Kept Us Up)’ features vocalist Carmel Reynolds, who has already made key contributions to the label’s evolution. A futuristic breakbeat workout, 'Moonlight' is intricate yet forceful, sometimes ethereal; sometimes menacing; it revises the rave blueprint for a new generation of dancers.

With his band Rubber Dub in increasing demand, whilst the Keep It Cryptic underground parties he co-promotes in Liverpool go from strength to strength, Ché is a rising force within the Merseyside music scene – this new single further enhancing his emergence.

Guevarism - Moonlight (Kept Us Up) ft. Carmel Reynolds

A multi-media label founded by DJ Greg Wilson, Super Weird Substance deals primarily with balearicpsychedelicdubdisco recordings whilst, on the live side, hosting sixties-styled ‘Happenings’ that include talks, art, bands and DJs.

Announcing its presence at the beginning of summer in 2014 – via the good vibes life-affirming mixtape ‘Blind Arcade Meets Super Weird Substance In The Morphogenetic Field’ – the label took five Super Weird Happenings across the country, whilst releasing a series of new recordings on vinyl, the next year. Eight singles were released between June and October, followed by a CD compilation, bringing together all of the singles as well as alternate versions and a special Greg Wilson mix.

Building on the success of a memorable Festival No.6 showcase in Portmeirion in 2015, Super Weird Substance returned in April 2017 with their most ambitious event to date, the 14 Hour Super Weird Happening at The Florrie. Prior to that Super Weird Substance collaborated with the man who bestowed their name, teaming up with Alan Moore and his Mandrillifesto project, Super Weird Substance created their second mixtape, ‘Alan Moore’s Mandrill Meets Super Weird Substance At The Arts Lab Apocalypse’, taking his acute social commentary and reinventing it within their own joyous sonic realm.

In 2018, the label returned to music with digital single, Gone With The Vibe and the first Substance Select EP. 2019 saw a new, younger energy introduced to the label, bringing with it new sounds, set to be unleashed in 2020, alongside Substance Select Vol.2, releasing Bella Technika remixes on vinyl.
