In 1980 while listening to songs submitted for what would become the LP ‘Splash’ by Freddie Hubbard, several of those—including this one (That Someone’s U) did not make its way to the final album tracks. It was never mixed down and the vocal tracks were ‘work takes/scratch vox’. Written
by Sydney Justin (aka ‘Steele’), Sanifu Al Hall, and the late David Shields; the song
languished on an outtake reel for decades until it was a part of a group
of tracks that were converted from analog to digital to be considered for
release in association with Russell Paine’s Super Disco Edits label. Hall notes that prior to
David’s death; he, Sydney, and David agreed to revisit and attempt to make the track viable-- “We
felt like the song itself was solid.”
The rhythm section is a who’s who in first-call studio players of the period, including
James Gadson (drums), David T. Walker & Paul Jackson, Jr. (guitars), Clarence McDonald (keyboards) (RIP)
David Shields (bass) and a couple of players, lead singer, and background singers not mentioned due to contractual
agreements as they are currently members of groups with outside performance restrictions. 

The track was originally produced and arranged by Sanifu Al Hall, Jr.; recorded at Hit City
West (Los Angeles CA) with additional tracking and the rough mix made at Fantasy Records Studios
(Berkeley CA). The group decided that any outtakes subsequently released would be under the
moniker-- The L. A. Propinquity. There is, at least, one more track recorded by this same lineup.
The song was remixed and arranged by Sanifu Al Hall, Jr. and mastered at Pine Studios (Jacksonville
FL) with engineer Jacob Darrell Hudson. Juan Carlos Rollan was brought in to add his tenor saxophone as an added highlight during the remix production session"...................

Welcome to the 3rd and final release from the Roz Ryan studio reel discovery from 1980.  Produced by the mighty Mike Theodore and Dennis Coffey their production skills and arrangements never fail to delivery, and they always throw in a breakdown to keep it funky. Roz Ryan is a household name within the u.s and had some great success in the uk with her hit on Mirage records entitled "Boy where have you been".On the A side we have another killer 2 step song called 'Love Changes" which was also covered by O.C Smith.  The sultry silky of vocals from Ms Ryan never fail to disappoint. Flip it over for "Funky Way To Treat Me". A Theo Coff production that has all those funky disco elemenents associated with the duo's output  of the late 70's.

During the summer youth program of 1970 and '71 at St Paul's Catholic church
a young Tunnie Smith was singled out by Father George Artist for his outstanding singing
abilities. 
He was soon introduced to Joe Delpit and Reginal Brown to sing along with their show and
dance band "The 13Th Amendments. It didn't take long before Tunnie was a full member of the 
band and became a featured singer performing throughout Louisiana.
After a year and a half of performing at nightclubs, military bases and universities Tunnie landed
a record deal with Rick Hall's Fame/UA record label.
His first single from 1973 was a wonderful mid-tempo number entitled "Finders Aren't Always Keepers"
flipped with "Do That To Me"
It gained National distribution and had some good success. Tunnie left Fame records and was 
introduced to Stax record executives Al Bell and John Smith.
After signing with Stax Tunnie met legendary writer and performer David Porter where they recorded
an album which was scheduled for release around 73/74.Unfortunately Staxs association with CBS came to a halt
and the project got shelved.
Tunnie went home and carried on performing around the Louisiana area with his new band Sweet Music Orchestra"
Fast forward to 1983 Tunnie whilst recording some vocals at River City Recording met Chicago producer
and arranger George "Paco" Patterson.  George was musical director and had worked with The Isley Brothers
Wilson Pickett and many other well known artists.
During this period Tunnie along with George formed a great partnership and along with some top session musicians
record some incredibly lush, well produced and atmospheric songs
The A Side "Dancing On Da Cloud" kicks of with female backing vocals and cascading strings layered over each other
to create a full bodied 2 Step Rare Groove classic, which we can only compare in the highest esteem to an
out take from Marvin Gaye or Leon Ware.  It oozes sheer class with rasping horns and Tunnie showing he 
hasn't lost any of the singing prowess he got singled out for as a young boy in1971.
"I Found A Miracle" is a slightly slower affair than the A side but still kicks a punch. It starts with pounding drums
and again those cascading strings whilst Tunnie's scatting vocals flow until the verse arrives.
It is a powerful beat ballad-esque song that sits perfectly back to back with "Dancing On Da Cloud."

From those session arose the wonderful "U And Me Together", leading on from the well produced "Finders Keepers" cut the song builds up with an epic 1:30 string and drum arrangement that really sets the picture for Tunnie to arrive with vocals way above his young age would suggest. A story of a boy and girl determined to make it and be the great combination that their love affair deserves. We cant believe a gem like this has been waiting to come out. And should have catapulted Tunnie to the next level or artist rosters. 
Alas, Tunnie went home and carried on performing around the Louisiana area with his new band Sweet Music Orchestra"

It oozes the same heavy production with opening piano cords and layered scatting then bosh, in comes the drums and Vox taking you on a mesmerising space like 2 step extravaganza . So there you have it, once again two amazing slices of soul on one single from Tunnie Smith. Lets hope this artists finally reaches his potential from that young man who stated recoding in 1973.

Based on an interest in experimental music and hybrids of all sorts as well as inspiration from 
his brother guitarist/songwriter Ron ‘Coz’ Hall, along with being an active member of Horace Tapscott’s Pan-African Peoples’ Arkestra; Sanifu, while never abandoning other opportunities and maintaining an ‘open mind’, was driven to quasi avant-garde leanings after a short stint in NYC and being introduced to the likes of Archie Shepp, Roswell Rudd and Grachan Moncur III by drummer friend Beaver Harris.

Those experiences and influences caused Sanifu to form The Cosmos Dwellerz Arkestra in 1970; since then, in some form or fashion, it has loosely existed sometimes as The CDA and The Cosmo Dwellerz Experimental Music Project with Sanifu always at the helm. The literation created music as loosely organized projects, always ignoring labels and genres, often using resources from the community (amateur musicians) and performing at non-profit events.

Sanifu has well over a half-century of credited work as a professional musician, arranger, composer, and publisher along with being associated with artists such as Ray Charles, Black Jazz Records (stablemates Doug Carn and Henry ‘Skipper’ Franklin make appearances on this album), Freddie Hubbard, Marvin Gaye, and numerous recordings as a top call studio trombonist /arranger/producer. Hall also worked in the R&B arena having credits with Mighty Fire, Bill Brown/Soul Injection, and Hank Hodge (many of those recordings are considered collector's items)

Project 43 was made using multiple musicians (aka Dwellerz) over a period of several years and conglomerate locations which will be clarified in the credits. As with all CDA efforts, this one is propelled by an inspired, intrepid collective–adeptly selected by Hall—of Dwellerz, and heterogeneous compositions assembled, arranged, and conducted judiciously by Sanifu.

ROZ RYAN – “KEEP SHINING”/”PUT LOVE BACK”
In 1980,  during her run on Broadway in the musical, Ain’t Misbehavin’ and before being cast in Dreamgirls, singer/actress and Detroit native ROZ RYAN teamed up with the legendary team of DENNIS COFFEY and MIKE THEODORE on a six song album that wound up being unreleased.
 Recently, the folks at Super Disco Edits released this 45 featuring Roz’ taking on Preston Glass’ “KEEP SHINING” b/w “PUT LOVE BACK” (composed by Eric McClinton). Both tracks were from the Theo-Coff sessions and make their debut for lovers of dancin’ (“Keep Shining”) and romancin’ (“Put Love Back”). Enjoy!

PHILLIP BALLOU
Pittsburgh-born Phillip Ballou’s earliest years were spent in the gospel field; after he moved to New York City in the ‘70s, he teamed up with Bennie Diggs and Arthur Freeman, founding members of The New York Community Choir and singer Arnold McCuller to form the group Revelation.  The quartet recorded for RSO Records, scoring some R&B success in the US with tracks like “Get Ready For This” and “You To Me Are Everything,” touring the Bee Gees among others.  Phillip also sang on albums by NYCC recorded for RCA Records and continued with Revelation until 1982.
Frequently hired for sessions in and around New York, Phillip teamed up with UK soul music journalist David Nathan (who he’d met in 1974 during Nathan’s first US visit) and John Simmons, formerly a member of The Reflections, another New York vocal group to write a series of songs for his own proposed solo record deal.  Although a contract did not materialize, one of the songs – “Ain’t Nothing Like The Love” – got some interest from famed Philadelphia producer Thom Bell who presented it to The O’Jays.  Ultimately, the tune was turned down by Kenny Gamble and John Simmons, by then musical director for Stephanie Mills, recorded his own version for a small independent label in 1981.
Phillip continued his own musical journey, touring and recording with James Taylor and Todd Rundgren. In addition, Phillip’s name graced recordings by George Benson, Billy Ocean, Kashif, Nona Hendryx, Jonathan Butler, Teddy Pendergrass and Melba Moore; in 1981, he began recording with Luther Vandross and became a part of Luther’s touring band for many years, as well as singing on productions by Luther on Aretha Franklin, Dionne Warwick and others, continuing his association with him until Luther’s 2003 stroke.  Phillip returned to his gospel roots in 2004 as Minister of Music at a Brooklyn church and passed away in March 2005, aged 55. 
Thanks to renewed interest in the John Simmons’ 1981 recording on YouTube, David Nathan has uncovered several tracks from the 1978 and 1979 he did with Phillip and John including Phillip Ballou’s original version of “Ain’t Nothing Like The Love,” gaining its first ever worldwide release as a 7” single on Nefer Records in association with Super Disco Edits

Its not often you stumble upon a 9 piece soul band, who were so close to signing a deal with mca's new subsidiary Source records. But group politics and other factors got in the way, and the band shelved what music they had recorded. No reels surfaced but fortunately a member had kept some of those 1978 recordings.  BETWEEN THE TWO seemed to fuse great  soul compositions without the durge  of the disco era circa 1978. . With well thought out lyrics, backed by keys, trumpets and a driving bassline we really are pleased to add the group to the Super Disco Edit roster

Coming at you hard with a brand new release, thats moved away from or usual unissued releases. DJ Rude Lead played me a demo he and Tom Noble from Superior Elevation cooked up whist Tom was in Denmark deejaing. 
They approached in indemand vocals of Jay Nemor from the states., who layed over some killer sultry lyrics and tones.
The song was only in demo form, so Super Disco Edits in house engineer Matt Fletcher and Owner of Super Disco Edits Russell Paine gave the song the boost and heaviness it desired! 
For this b side we decided to give the instrumental that 1980s synth boogie feel, to give you some value for money.

After ending his tenure with The Spinners, Rodney Stepp returned to Indianapolis to lead a new band with a spirited sound: Rapture. Rapture's roots stem back to Indianapolis in the 1970s when the music scene was teeming with a number of soul musical acts – But none was more widely acclaimed than Rapture. Original group members Harry Eaton, Drums - Lonnie Williams, Guitar, Rodney Vorhis, Bass, Tony Hayes, Percussion, Greg Russell, Guitar, Herman Walker Jr., Trumpet, Pheldon Jay Majors, Trombone, Rodney Stepp, Keys  each brought a rich resume of musical experience and passion to Rapture. These musicians all started their careers as teenagers, playing in popular local bands including the Diplomats, the Sonic Sounds, the Implements, and the Soul Perfections. And most went on to play behind top artists like The Spinners, Leroy Hutson and Betty Wright
In 1978, Rapture auditioned for a production deal on the newly revived American Recording Company. Leaving behind families and jobs to pursue their dreams, the band members embarked for California; however, within six months, the band's projects were shelved and the group members returned to Indianapolis, performing for another two years before disbanding.
Now fast forward to 2018 and Super Disco Edits takes great pleasure in resurecting the music of Rapture.

Bill Brown and Al Hall jr met around 1971, they were both in south central L.A and shared the same apartment building, also in the same building was Doug Carn and brownstone singer billy Wilson.
These studio sessions were don't at Paramount studios Hollywood where Al Hall jr was working for producer Art Smith a&c music.
The main distributor for A&C was Accent records. So the Soul Injections very first single "Stay off the moon" was released via Accent, as was Bill Browns "Bip Bam" The group wasn't that pleased with how Accent handle the releases so Bill took it upon himself to set up his own label called Brownstone records. Many musicians were called in for studio sessions these included 
Doug Carn, organ; Kirk Lightsey, keyboards; Mel Bolton,
guitars; Mel Lee, drums; Al Hall jr (trombones), Willaim 'Bill'Henderson strings.
The label was met with some confrontation from other Hollywood labels and many of the Brownstone releases were told not to hit the shops by Mafia run labels. Later around 1975 Brownstone released a track by Everyday people feat Alexis "world full of people"....A now cult soul 45 ....Love under the apple tree is a song of innocence, but with such a soulful jazzy twist, and a backing track to die for.

The first incarnation of the Cosmos Dwellerz Arkestra was formed in the early 1970's by Sanifu Al Hall. Jr.
His goal was to form a group using available cutting-edge technolgies of the day fusing it into creative musical works.
What would now be called a hybrid group. Along with the quasi-standard Jazz group.
Sanifu made sagacious use of several analoguesynthesizers to forge both ambient and melodic incorporations.
Additionally he used unique signal processing on his trombone for this 1977 session.
