When North Kingdom contacted us to work on a new, multi-level online game for Disney, we were intrigued. This was our 4th project with North Kingdom, who does, in our opinion, amazingly cool and creative stuff.
From the very start of the project, we were given access to the Creatives at Disney for direction. Our spec was for a cinematic score with 3 sublevels, the overture presenting the theme. Target group, M/F age 8-14.
Overture – Disney/Pixar style cinematic theme
Level 1 – The innocence of childhood, safe and secure, European village, exploratory.
Level 2 – The dangers of adolescence, Jungle environment, think Indiana Jones /John Williams
Level 3 – Urban, Urbane…You’re a phat cat, you’ve made it. City landscape, success, rich…think Gershwin.

We came to think of the music as a (very short) symphony in 3 movements, each movement related but different enough to frame the specific direction given. This approach worked well until level 3, where we thought that the Gershwin vibe may lose a large chunk of our target audience. Our suggestion was a sort of Big Band / Hip Hop composition, this raised some eyebrows. The folks at Disney said…ok…you produce it and we’ll decide…It worked.
